nater006
I'm riding my '96 with the new transmission this weekend. Everything is great but the top end of the rpms. I ran into almost the exact same problem before and it seemed to be jetting. I bumped it down a size and it ran like a champ, plugs were a nice brown color. Same conditions, same riding, same me, nothing changed (except maybe a lil extra 2-cycle oil on the bearings from assembly). It just goes BLAH if you crank it, even after its been warmed up. Even if you gradually work your way up to the high rpms.. it never gets there. Just blahs eventually, like 2/3 to 3/4 throttle. If you hold the throttle for a few seconds during the blah, it sputters a bit and eventually goes POP (backfire type of deal) out of one of the cylinders. Not sure if that is typical to an ignition problem or jetting problem though? Tried new plugs. Dumped jetting down one size. Plugs still turn out nice and brown (its a few degrees warmer out than last time). The only change to the ignition is the addition of a Rickystator 200w stator and adjustable plate, both of which are installed correctly. Pickup coil is at .018 from the flywheel magnets. I'm at a loss... could this just be the extra 2-cycle oil that was used for reassembly that is causing this? I haven't fouled plugs and the diode is brown, but the ring around the outside of the plug is oily. Any ideas? Thanks, as always..
nater006
I just poked further and there is a rattling noise coming from the left plug cap. Thats the cylinder that is backfiring also. Plugs are still coming out with a little oil on them though. Ideas?
Banchetta
I just had the same problem and it was electrical.....Ran great until high rpms, then spit and sputter....I grenaded a stator and flywheel when I went to Cali and put a spare stator and flywheel in from a couple of other hq members to get by....It wouldn't run right after and I thought it was jetting...Got home, replaced the stator and flywheel and it ran mint after..... Oh ya, you might want to check the Tors..little black box above the left exhaust and the parking brake switch....
H300F
well what is the the size of main jet you are using? to me it sounds lean, but you said the plugs were brown. from my experience a continuos bog was lean and a rev limiter type of bog was rich. you may want to also check out the plug wires, caps. make new ones out of auto wires and new caps. BrokeStonedBiker
mine goes zing zing. wide open is smooth you need to adjust your carbs or get some new pipes. lol
nater006
BrokeStonedBiker, that was an utterly useless response... I wondered if it wasn't the stator. I put a new RS 200w stator on it. Tomorrow or Tues i'll go swap the stocker back in and see. Just a weird problem. It sounded like jetting but the plugs are a nice brown.. MotulMonsta
I liked it.
nater006
Just some FMF loyal people here. I was mostly looking for some help, not stupid comments about my choice of pipes.
Banchetta
The reason why my stator was doing it was because the wires were spliced since the plug was different...I think it was just a bad connection....So don't rule out the plug wires or anything electrical....you can test the stator w/ an ohm meter at the wire harness plug... BrokeStonedBiker
yeah sorry about that. i didnt know what the problem was so i thought it would be funny and you would know it was a joke. just check everthing. you sound like tou know what ya doin. if in dought check it out. good luck with it
nater006
No worries I'm going to put the regular stock stator back in it tomorrow or Tues and see how it runs. The jetting seemed fine... it just pooped out in the high ranges, thats all. If it was running lean, it wouldn't be pooping out though would it? The plugs came out brown.. Banchetta
LIght brown could be lean, dark brown is optimum......
nater006
But would a lean condition in the main jets cause it to cut out like that in teh top RPMs? It was like it had either no spark or no fuel (or at least not a good mixture of fuel/air). Just would go POP after a few seconds if you held the throttle open. I figured it would run fine but lean if it was lean by a size or two... didn't think it would cut out? But... dunno. Never had that problem before. Banchetta
Jetting can be funny. My stock cylinders would cut out w/ 280 mains like someone hit the kill switch. I went to 300's and its jetted perfect.....Then I've seen other pipes and setups run great w/ 200 mains, but are lean, and we end up running a 290 for optimum jetting...so go figure.....the main jet only controls wide open throttle, so it could be possible the main jet is too lean..Drop a 300 in there, if it still persist, then you have an electrical problem....Lets start from the beginning. What are all your mods, jetting, temp, elevation, when did this problem start? Edited April 12, 2004 by Banchetta
nater006
I'm running some unknowns unfortunately. The carbs are supposedly bored out slightly. They're roundside Mikuni, no TORS. I haven't measured the ID of them with a caliper yet to find out the exact mm. That'll be tomorrow or tues now that i have a caliper.. I got the quad a few months ago from a guy that said "the jetting is perfect". It had 220 jets in it. I've got T5s, the pro design intake, and a port job on the motor. Since I got it in like January and he had it jetted for warmer weather, I bought 240s (no 230s in stock unfortunately) to ride it for a weekend in the cold cold weather. It ran a little boggy in the top end until it was REALLY cold one of the nights. Almost like now but now its mostly just like.. cutting out. I popped 230s into it and it ran like a champ in the 35-45 degree weather. rode it twice in the weather for hours and it ran like a champ. Plugs came out with a nice brown finish. This weekend, after putting it back together and changing only the trans and the stator, i have these problems. Plugs were coming out brown, though a little lighter brown.. not white though by any means. Even put the 220s back in it and it didn't help at all. Those seem small compared to some of the jetting I see around here but... the carbs are still an unknown. Not sure why it would run perfect for a couple rides and then not at all. Who knows...
