Left one is black and the right one is tan /brown on the porcelean. compression is same on both and shee runs fine, but plugs indicate something different going on in the combustion chamber. sredish Posted April 9, 2004 Report Share Posted April 9, 2004 The left cylinder, with stock carbs especially, can have a tendency to run a little richer on the left cylinder. Has something to do with the choke on the carbs. There could be a small air leak on the right side causing it to lean out some. If you've checked it all out and can't find anything then don't worry. The one tan/brown plug should be a darker brown color, if that's the case and it's running good, then just leave it, if it's too light, then maybe jet that carb a tad richer. It's not unheard of to have one carb jetted a tad different. Just make sure that's the problem, and it's not masking something else. Here's a good article on reading plugs. BenBB Posted April 9, 2004 Report Share Posted April 9, 2004 I agree with sredish, as long as you don't go to an extreme like different main sizes. An air leak is a possibility, however it could also be something simple like float height not the same or a clogged pilot. sredish Posted April 10, 2004 Report Share Posted April 10, 2004 But that's acting like the fuel mixture is underneath the spark, when it's actually surrounding the entire sparking area and plug, so I don't see that it would benefit that much. Also, by covering the electrode with the arm, you have more sparking area, by "side gapping", your limiting the amount of area to allow for spark. Nice theory, I just don't agree.
