How did your motor act when you lightned your flywheel??? Im a heavier rider about 230 and Im wondering how it will effect the characteristics of my motor. I just had it done and am gunna pick it up tomorrow at the machine shop

From my knowledge, kickass mod...but my cheap ass hasn't done it yet. :flush: Lightening the flywheel will give you better throttle response & less bog in the lower RPMs. You can do a search & find a lot of info on this topic, but I'm sure someone with expertise in this area will be on here shortly to fill you in or correct me if I'm wrong. hehe L8R!

What happens when you lighten your flywheel is that you get rid of rotational mass. This is a good thing in a 2 stroke engine. It can be good in multi cylinder 4 stroke engines as well, but we won't go there at the moment. Now, doing this does a few things. It allows the motor to rev faster. What this will do for your seat of the pants feel is give you wicked throttle response. When you crack the throttle, and allow more fuel into the engine, this is less mass that the motor has to get moving. Now, some people will say some sort of nonsense about how does that effect my power output just removing 9 oz. when your moving a 600 lb. bike with rider? Well, when you remove it from the root of the power, it means ALOT!! Say your turning 9,000 RPM in first gear. Are your tires spinning 9,000 RPM??? nope. Your tranny takes care of that. Lightening up the mass on the crankshaft itself is awesome. I have heard some sort of business about the bike wanting to come out of the powerband and what not. Not the case. it allows you to get to the powerband easier, and smoother. The bike stays in the powerband if you want it to due to the piston having combustion taing place every 180 degrees of crank rotation. Think about that for a moment. every 180 degrees. There are 360 degrees in a circle. On a four stroke engine, you have a power stroke, then 720 degrees of rotation before another power stroke occurs. What keeps the motor from dying at idle? The flywheel. The rotational mass of the crank. Now, a twin cylinder is different, there is 360 degrees between power stroks. This is on a 4 stroke remember. Now, back to the shee. So, we lighten things up, and allow the motor to rev free, whenever you want it to. it makes the bike a pleasure to ride. :headbang: Instant thhrottle response. I guarantee it.

Just a FYI, I am tipping the scales at about 235 myself. I wouldn't trade my lightened flywheel for anything!!!!!

My signature is meant to be more comical than anything.  And it didn't cost me anything to lighten my flywheel.   I lighten flywheels, shave heads, and mod shift stars.....  :headbang:

well, it cost you your time, don't sell yourself short.

i imagine one of these days, i'll give you one to play with, but I'm just too content at the moment.

Hey boonman

how much do you charge for the flywheel job, i know you charge $40 for the stock head (i will contact you later about that). anything else you do that you can let us new guys know about (and price) and what the best way to contact you. really appreciate the help, thanks

BOONMAN just did mine & I couldn't believe the amount of material that was removed from the flywheel. It is definetly lighter. Had the shiftstar mod done too, looks great. Now if I could only save up enough to get my cylinders ported by Passion I would actually be able to ride it. I had Duncan Racing lighten the flywheel on my LT500 and noticed that it liked to rev alot quicker than it used to. Almost thought it was too lean.

My fly wheel is shaved and every aspect of the ride is better.I still have power in lower RPMs and can hit the power band at will by touching the throttle. Its one of those things alot of people dont think about so getting it done is like an edge over alot of other shees. Bottom line its the best bang for the buck mod in my opinion.
