J..J.
Hey guys, I've been assigned to a shipbuilding yard in South Korea, so have to pack the shee away for about 1 1/2 years. Have done the following to prepare for longterm storage: Cleaned bike completely. Lubed everything I could find, gease zerks, chain, cables. Filled the axle carrier completely with grease (grease zerks fitted) Drained carbs. Drained tank. Filled the gear case right to the top of the dipstick hole with gear oil (to prevent the exposed gears from corrosion) Covered all the bling bits with spray on non-stick cooking fat (aerosol type) Couple of table spoons of Yamalube down the plug holes. Anything I forgot? How can I stop my new Kenda Claws from perishing? Thanx in advance
MADMOOSE
as long as the tires are in a voporlocked bag they should be fine so even saran wrap should work if u use enough but i think there is also a tire tratment u can get to proliong life.... fixitrod
Do it like winterizing a boat. I would fill the gas tank to the brim and use fuel stabalizer. Of course I'd empty it when I got back. This will prevent any water from forming in the tank from condensation. The stabalizer will keep the gas from breaking down and leaving deposits. Leaving the carbs empty is a good idea though. The yamalube should work but you may want to use fogging oil. I think it will stick to the cylinders and parts better. It will also stick to the crank and everything else in the motor. You don't want water sticking to it from condensation. Grease everything you can. Tip your quad up so the head lights are facing the sky to drain any water out of the frame. Then set it on blocks to keep the suspension releived. Lube the crap out of the chain and cables. Use a cable lube kit. That will keep rust and water out of them. Keep it covered. I wouldn't plug the exhuast air tight. You don't want the condensation to stay in the pipes and cylinders when the temp changes. Make sure your coolant is 50/50 at least. You don't want the cylinders cracking (depending where your going to store it) That's about all I can think of right now. Look up winterizing a boat for more ideas. It's the same idea. Have fun in Korea
J..J.
Thanx for the tips guys, didn't think about draining the water out the frame - good idea. Coolant is mixed 50/50 and it doesn't get too cold here in South Africa so I should be ok in that department. Not too worried about the fuel tank either, I'll just rinse it when I get back. My main concern is corrosion in the cylinders, perishing of rubber parts like o-rings and seals, especially the brake system. I've arranged for the Old Man to crank her over once in a while and to operate the brakes and clutch. Once again thanks to all for the advice. Have fun in Korea Thanks! Don't think it'll be much fun, spotted some cool downhill singletrack on a previous trip so I'm taking my mountain bike and ofcourse the HQ is never too far away

MADMOOSE
acualy yah what u talkin bout with filling the tank...theres a little switch on the side under the tank called a pet cock...u jsut shut it off then just leave the vent hose off so air can pass thu and nothign big....i would still wash it tho...i think u should do somthing witht eh brakes too...dont want them seizing....are u close to any bodys of saltwatter...if so u should get some rust proofin and coat the girl up...and yes giver a kizz goodbye...oh one more thing with the tires let the air outa them orelse they will die faster kuz there is un needed pressure on them....hope she stays unmolested
