stealthawd Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 OK...last week, I put T5 pipes on with the perfect jet kit and intake kit. I also installed a twist throttle and the idle kit and removed the TORS. Rode the day after I got everything put on with no problems. Bike ran great, nice snap...world of difference. Went riding the next day and the throttle stuck after landing a jump. I immediately shut it down, jerked with the throttle, started it and it was still stuck. Shut it down and started to check things out...the left side cable was loose, telling me that the slide was stuck, no biggie. I'm digging around in there after taking off the filter and the slide won't move. I loosen the idle screw and the slide pops back down. I start the bike and that side is smoking quite a bit. I turn the idle screw back in and it locks down on the slide and won't let you give it throttle. When I installed the idle kit, the idle screws could not "lock down" on the slide, they hit the angled part. That side is still smoking quite a bit. When I rode back to the truck afterwards, that side sounded different unless I was wide open, then it sounded normal. I'm tearing into it this afternoon, but was fishing for suggestions on what to look for first...Thanks in advance Quote
banshdog Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Look in the carb for any debris, possibly metal shaving from installing the idle kit Quote
stealthawd Posted March 25, 2004 Author Report Posted March 25, 2004 yeah...that was my first thought will that cause it to smoke more than normal? Quote
ledofthezep Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Make sure the slides are still in sync....get in there & see what ya find. Once you tear into them you should be able to locate the problem. Quote
bigboybanshee Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 I agree with banshdog, check it for debris, or maybe something could have shaken loose inside the carb and it's catching on the slide...not too sure about the smoking though...you say it's on the left side right? Did it smoke at all before you changed the jetting? Just out of curiousity, what size jets did you put in there and did you change the needle clip setting? Quote

Did it smoke at all before you changed the jetting? Just out of curiousity, what size jets did you put in there and did you change the needle clip setting? it just smoked normally before and after the rejetting...it didnt start smoking excessively until it stuck. I put new needles and 280 jets in as per the instructions from Toomey. I was thinking the same thing about something catching on the slide, cuz there is no way that the idle screws should bind the slide. it is rounded off against the angle of the slide. zep...regarding syncing the carbs. is there any tricks I should know or is it as simple as it sounds. basically, i just made sure that both cables were tight without pulling on the slides so the slides are in sync and they pull the same amount. I did not mess with the air screw on either carb. I have read that each should be around 1.5 turns out. so does this mean I screw them all the way in and come out 1.5 turns or is there a "point" I should go 1.5 turns out? Quote
bigboybanshee Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Checking the slides is really easy...there is an indention on the side of the slides as well as a window on the side of the carbs...basically you hit your throttle slowly and watch through the little window until you see the indention appear through the window. Then, you look at the window on the other carb and see if the indention on the other slide is showing...if it is GREAT, if not, you're out of sync... As far as the idle screws, yes, you screw them in all the way, and then turn the 1.5 turns out from the "all the way in" position. You don't necessarily have to have them 1.5 turns out, that's just the ideal setting...you can go I think up to 3 turns out before you need to adjust your pilot jet. Hope that helps! Quote
stealthawd Posted March 25, 2004 Author Report Posted March 25, 2004 that helps perfectly...i was trying to look in from the air box LMAO DUH, thats what the little damn windows are for... Quote
banshdog Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 your idle screws will set and "lock" nicely if you file down the angle till its flat. I did mine on a milling machine, one pass and its done. but then you can be sure that the idle screws will not move. Quote

banshdog Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 oh oh oh, i see. no the screws are not supposed to lock on the slides. the angle on the slide allows for idle adjustment. the angle just comes down and sits on the rounded end of the idle screw. Quote
