This Sucks

Havnt been on the forum in over a year now..... so its interesting to see the t6's came out after years of rumors of their ranting... Any way ill get to it.....

My banshee has always been rather sluggish for its mods and it wasnt till i finally raced my my brothers stock up against mine that i realized some thign was wrong....

Mine having pipes. cool head, open k&n degree key was lossing to my brothers stocker... I thought it was jetting and played with that a lot... i figuerd this cause it was hard to start. The compression was good and resistnaces on the coil and stator were fine and i had removed the tors a long time ...

So i Finally i made a leak down tester from some home depots plumbing parts and found a problem... The air leaked out in a matter of 10 seconds!!!!! So tonight i finally took the quad apart to find where the leak was and to my supprise i found a small screw wedged behind the primary drive gear on the crakshaft and the seal. Needless to say the seal was toast and there wasnt much gear oil when i drained it.

Thiis explains a lot on why my quad was down on power, hard to start, and had problems with the shitfer -which worsed the last few times i did ride it.

Makes me wonder how the hell a screw would have gotten in there and how long i was riding around with it inside. All I can think is that some jeolus punk sabotoged my qaud at one of my parties.....

Now im in the position where i am facing an expenasive rebuild. Which i dont really have the money for right now. This makes whole thing makes me mad cause spring is in the air and my borther has been thaking his quad out the past few days to go riging around. This just shouldnt have happened.

Im also curious about my shifter problem. When I first got the quad there was always a problem finiding neutra. This problem on worsenedl the very last time i rode it was stuck between gears i.e. It would down to 2nd or up to 3rd and not click back up. Would this be from a bent shift fork or some internal mechanism breaking? i would like to hear some thoughts on what is wrong with the shifter so i can have an idea what to look for.

thanks

Hey Matt.

Man that sucks indeed. but on the other hand you can be verry happy the screw didnt float around freely in your crankcase or transmission.

NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NASTY! banghead

I dont think the rebuild has to be that expensive.

is your crank still ok?

I think new oil at the right level will fix most or your shifting problems, since over the last rides like you said much oil had been drained trough the oil seals.

Neutral is always hard to find on a banshee.

There is a modification for that:

It requires you to modify the shift star.

Shifting will be smoother, easier and neutral better to find.

+ its not expensive.

***update***

When i read your reply i wanted to show my brother the shift star mod so I did a google search and found this thread. The shift star is one of the few things left in the clutch area.

http://race.atvaddiction.com/forums/showth...p?threadid=1083

The screw was staring right at me so i went to check it and sure enough the shift star was flopping around.in the breeze. This releaved me greatley but raise a few questions at the time. It would explain the porblem with shifting my quad on the last ride i had but might not necessarily explain the power loss before hand. The seal could of been bad before hand or it could have not. Not sure whati am gonig to do bout this. Looking for some opinions on weather I should split the case or not.

Easy fix....

Take your clutch cover off & move your shifter, you'll see where it's gotten bound up and you can take a little flathead & un-bind it. Then, take your shifter off, put a rubber washer next to the stator cover, then a regular washer, and put your shifter back on. That will eliminate the left-to-right play of the shiftshaft that allows that shit to bind up.

I forgot to put the washers back on before the shifter after I installed a new stator, went to the dunes last weekend and what do ya know?...the damn gears locked up in 2nd-3rd. Didn't think anything of it until I started her up to head back to camp & fix it and it didn't go anywhere....I think it toasted my relatively brand new dirtdigger clutch. banghead Talk about a kick in the ass, epecially after shee was out of comission for damn near 6 months prior to this trip!

So I 'kinda' feel your pain. But the gear problem is a pretty easy fix,...the other crap you got going on; that just plain sucks. Hope shee gets better soon. ;)

Hey Led,

When I was at the doons recently I had a problem hiting fase neutrals between 4th and 3rd and 3rd and 2nd when I was in 4th or 3rd going flat out up a steep hill and then having to slow down half way up the hill to negotiate turns or obsticles and get back on the power again in the lower gear. I hadn't ever had the problem before but it did it a few times on this one particular hill. A couple of times I hit the throttle expecting to hit the band in the next gear down and the motor just reved to the sky. Sometimes I was able to shift down again and save the climb, others I it took too long and I bogged and lost too much momentum and ended up digging a hole and geting stuck. :flush: When shifting down due to bogging in a high gear it wasn't a problem, only when I had to let completely off the gas for about a half a second to turn and shifted down. An it never jammed like you described. Do you think your shifter mod will remedy my false neural problem or do I just need to work on some cleaner downshifts or something? banghead

Hey led, are you talking about the sloted ring that comes off when you take your crank case sproket off? If you have pics that would be great..Cause I have this problem that I have never had before this weekend, I had to move the shifter up when I got my boots this christmas, but now that I have broke the boots in I moved the shifter back down, I also installed a case saver this weekend..which made take off the sproket and the little locking plate, but what happened this weekend is when I was drag racing and power shifting, just holding it full throtle and pulling in the clutch and grabing another gear, I could not get it into 3rd at all, but like when I was just normaly riding I could hit 3rd fine?? any ideas?

I dunno it will do much for that problem, perhaps maybe modding the shift star itself would...but I have no experience there so I can't tell ya for sure. Lots of people on here have info on that subject. It could be worth a shot though just for grins, all ya gotta do is pull the shifter off & put a couple washers on that shaft & throw the shifter back on. I always try to make sure that I shift fairly smoothly & make sure it enguages the gear.

No,...as far as shimming up the shifter, just pull the shifter itself off, put a rubber washer on 1st(so there's no grindige into the flywheel/stator cover) and then a regular washer, and then put your shifter back on. As far as un-binding it, just drain the oil, pull the clutch cover off, and just move the shifter a bit and look, you'll see clearly where it's getting hung up at. Sorry I don't have any pics... :(
