gurny Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Right now I have 1.5" cut off my air box lid and now I want to just take it off and put an outerwear on my K&N. Will I lose HP from this mod? It sounds stupid to me, but a friend of mine told me this. More air + more fuel = more power right? Quote
scotts96fast Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 running a lid to no lid is 4-5 hp gain.Cutting the last 1.5 off is a lost of .5 hp from no lid at all.Not a big change for you to run no lid at all.... Quote
Banchetta Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Your only talking about .5 hp like scott said, then when we dynoed w/ and w/o the outerware, there was a .25hp loss w/ the outerware...Of course just the temp of the motor could vary the dyno that much....Basically, a K&N w/ an outerware vs, a K&N w/o an outerware and cut lid are within .25-.5 hp.....I always use the outerware and lid if I run in mud or water, but take the lid off when I ride strictly sand and dry trails... gurny Posted March 21, 2004 Author Report Posted March 21, 2004 Thanks alot. It seems like there is very little gain from what I have now. I m going to jump one or two jet sizes. Is that right? I already ordered the jets and outerwear so O well. Thanks again Quote
Banchetta Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Up the mains 2 sizes for the cut lid vs whole lid... Quote
gurny Posted March 22, 2004 Author Report Posted March 22, 2004 I have the lid cut right now. Do I have to go up on the mains if I take it off??? Quote
nater006 Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Mine's off and the jetting is bumped one size. Guy I got it from said 220 was good for the weather. The 240s that were in there were way too big. So i popped the lid and re-jetted with 230s and voila.. it was good. That is to say that the guy i got it from knew what he was doing... hehe.. but you can't hurt it to bump it up a size and give it a shot. Quote

Makes a little more difference when removing the lid with pipes vs stock pipes and even more difference when removing the lid with pipes and a K&N vs pipes and foam filter. With pipes and a foam filter & nonported, going up 2 main sizes will usually do it for going from stock lid (snorkel off, lid un-cut) to lid off. Depending on how modded or how many holes you got in your air box lid, if you have enough open area it wont make any difference taking it off. With just the last 1.5" cut off the lid, probably go up zero to 1 main size, possibly 2 with K&N and high rev pipes. Quote
nater006 Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 Yup.. knew it would make a pretty good difference with the intake and pipes. Had a few vents in it but nothing special. Runs like mad without it, thats for sure! Figured it would never see the mud and that the airbox could just be removed. Very first ride... nothing but mud! Seems to be jetted fine for the weather with that setup. Not complaining! Losing the airbox lid was the best thing ever though. Quote

Banchetta Posted March 24, 2004 Report Posted March 24, 2004 ???? You shouldn't have to change the jets, since there is almost no air flow difference between the cut lid and no lid.....My plugs read the same w/ or w/o the cut lid. Quote
