First Attempt At Self-guillotine

Recommended Posts

Ok so here's how my past 2 days have gone...

Yesterday at work I opened up a drain on the bottom of an oil reservoir to drain off any water accumulation. While the water was running out I walked away to do a few other things. Sure 'nuff, I forgot all about the damn thing and all the oil drained out onto the ground...about 40 gallons worth. So I spent all of yesterday cleaning that one up. Then there was today...

We were hoisting a pump out of a sump using a crane. Its a weird setup so I'll try to explain. Basically a cable is fixed to the pump down in the hole. This cable runs up through a stainless steel plate that covers the hole. When they started lifting the pump, they couldn't get clearance to just let the cover slide down the cable due to obstructions in the area. So they rotated the cover 90 degrees and tied it off to the cable using the weight of the pump to hold it. Everything was fine until I stepped in to help guide the pump to solid ground. Once the weight was removed from the cable that 60-70 pound plate came sliding down and grazed me on the back of my skull  . Luckily it barely tagged me and I escaped with only a 9-staple gash in the back of my head...and a stack of paperwork. But really if it had been a few inches closer it would've sliced my head in half. So I'm off to buy my lottery ticket now.

Ouch. Glad your still with us. One of our drivers at work was

having one of them days today. I heard a big crash and walked

back to find that the boob had just backed the truck into the garage

door (it was not up all the way) and knocked it off track. Well come

to find out, he had JUST come from our other wharehouse, where he

had JUST done the same damn thing!!! He hasn't been around too long

and I don't think he is going to be around too long :D .

While we are talking about bad days at work, I had one monday, which was my Bday! I do heat treating at an aluminum plant, the water tank is about 15Wx115'deep and the furnace is directly above that at the same dimensions. Anyway, I was dropping a load (metal out of furnace into water) and the frickin cables snapped! It comes out about 60 feet per sec. and stops as soon as the metal is submerged completely, well this time it didn't! So they had to bring divers in to rehook it after the cables were fixed. Oh, this happened on 6 helicopter blades that are about $18-20,000 a piece! I am fairly new at this particular job so everyone thought I f@$#ed it up. Thank god it was an equipment failure. Not near as dramatic as staples to the head!

Man, i'm glad your ok cause that coulda been bad. On a lighter note I was just cracking up at that picture. I was picturing some guy with a staple gun coming up to you right after it happened and stapling your head while saying, "all set back to work!" Hope you didn't pay for those.
