banshdog
hey guys, new member, lookin for some help. I have an 03 Banshee that i recently purchased from a dealer. the bike is new, just has been on the showroom floor for a year. anyway, i put new reeds, spacers, jets, open air box w/K&N filter, Pro-Circuit pipes and silencers on it, and removed the TORS. Yesterday was the first day i got to actually ride it in some terrain (mostly wet sand and mud). Every thing was fine for about an hour and a half or so. The problem is that when i was riding the back tires were locking up for split seconds then spinning again. It was doing this in first and second gear (didnt have chance to get into third). I shut the bike off to check it out, and after it cooled for about 20-25 minutes the problem went away, but did occur a few times later. It seems to happen during the bottom end of the gear, once the rpms get up it goes away. I was going to drain the oil to be sure there are no gear teeth just chillin in there. But i really have no idea what would be causing this problem. Would low oil cause this? Too hot? WHERE SHOULD I START LOOKING? WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS? ledofthezep
Dunno man, lack of oil maybe. I'd drain the oil & see if there's any metal shavings or anything in it. Keep checking back, I'm sure someone with more tranny knowledge will be able to help you out. I've not heard of that happening before, so I dunno. What oil are you running? Could be a clutch issue... sandman121383
so ur saying when u shift it locks up momentarily and then begin to spin again under steady throttle? hmm do u have a hard time shifting? or does it shift smooth and still jam on ya after u shift and release the clutch? i don't want to jump 2 any conclusions just yet maybe someone else can help that had a similar prob till u give us a little more information. banshdog
No problems shifting at all. It is locking up after the clutch has been released and i start moving. As i am riding it makes loud clunking noises and locks up frequently, but as i mentioned, its only at lower RPMs. When the wheels would lock up they would skid for a few inches then turn a few times, then lock up again, etc. It seemed like once it entered the powerband, the problem stopped. I have never experienced any thing like this before, but it is a very violent stopping of the wheels with a loud clunking noise. I just checked the oil, its full and clean from what i can tell. I will drain it, and check it out, if you guys think i might find something.
DUNEDEMON
I say if that beast is new off the show room floor take that motha' back to the dealer. let them diagnose / fix the issue under warranty.
FULL_METAL_JACKT
maybe ur chain is loose?!?!?!?
banshdog
The chain/sprocket was my first idea. I took the slack out of the chain, but havent had a chance to check it out yet, hope that fixes it.
MotulMonsta
Take it back to the dealer if it's still under warrenty.
Blacksmith
The first thing that comes to my mind is that there is now way the back tires can lock up while the bike is in gear and the motor is running without causing the motor to die, unless the clutch is pulled in. Take the chain off, put the bike up on blocks and try to roll over the back tires. I think that your problem might be in your axle bearings. However as many others have stated, I think that you should take it back and see if you are still under warranty. Good luck, have fun. Cotton eyed Joe
Good luck on the warranty. I've seen first hand how that shit works. My buddy had a new 99 banshee. The FACTORY forgot to install a few studs in the front part of the cases. On a trip to St. Anthony it started blowing oil, and was seperated by about 1/8". At the dealer he said my buddy was using the wrong type of premix, and thats why it was smoking and all oily. After he pointed out the lower half of the engine not being sealed did they even think about doing anything about it. Guess what they did? They tore the engine down, hosed it out and thats it. They were reluctant to do that even. They said it wasn't their problem, even though it came from the factory that way and had less that 3 hours on it. It was less than a week old. My buddy checked with a lawyer to see if he could sue for damages since we drove about 600 miles round trip and shit. The lawyer said there were no consumer protection laws on ATVs like there is on cars. If a car dealer were to have sold a car with a similar problem, and refused to fix it, we could have taken them to court for costs of repairs or for a whole new bike. If I were you, I wouldn't take any shit at all from the Yamaha dealer. f*ck em. You gave them your money, and now you have problems. Try and get things done in a civil manner, but if you have to get in someones shit, DO IT! Sorry, I just hate some of these local Yami dealers because of whats been done with me and my friends. If I owned a Yamaha dealership things would be very different around here.
