My step dad is running t-5s with a k@n filter and a vented airbox lid. He has 280 mains and the needle second from the top and stock pilots. The air screws are out 1.5 turns and it is running like crap. We have put the needle in all six spots and it runs about the same in every slot. The midrange is really bad. The top end seems to be fine but right before you get on the pipe the power goes flat. We switched out the toomeys with fmf's and it runs the exact same. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would also recommend the reeds before you screw with the jetting too much. If you start messing with the jetting, and it turns out to be the reeds, you will have spent a lot of wasted time hunting and then you'll have to fix what you screwed up.

As far as the needle, you should be on the 3rd at minimum and most likely the 4th with pipes, depending on your elevation. Once you get it running, I would change it to the 4th and see how you like it. If its too rich then back it off one. You might be happier with a tad richer pilot, like some 27.5s. Give that a go when you get it all buttoned up.

Take the lid off or cut the end of it (1.5"), that'll help a lot...how do you clean the air filter?? Start w/ 350 mains and work down from there, needles on the 4th clip from the blunt end, stock pilots, and adjust air screws....

Sorry I haven't replied to this earlier. I was at little sahara the last two days. We checked the reeds and they seemed to be fine. We got the carbs in sync and it still didn't help anything. I guess we will check the float levels tomorrow and see if excess gas is leaking into the cylinders. I don't think that is the reason that it is running bad though. It isn't that hard to start it.

Where are your needles? As you'll see in the below chart, the needles are a big contributor to the entire midrange. If you don't have those set properly, then your mid will be blah. It could still start okay with the right pilot.
