My Roostfest Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Ok here is my take on the "Roostfest trip"

For those of you that didnt make it... You dont know what you missed... for those of you that did make it.... You know why you will be at the next one!

On sunday (feb 29) John (jkjk) and his brother Joe arrived early(12 or 1pm) at the house waiting for Jason (Banchetta) to show up. Jason was to haul our bikes out west and back for us. Then we found out that Jason had to work that morning and was planning on driving straight out to Rodney's (fixitrod) house after he left my place. Jason's co-pilot also backed out last minute and he was about to venture on a 6000 mile round trip SOLO! Jason was able to get a passenger to help him on the trip..... Around 2:00 or 3:00pm Jason arrives w/ a brand new trailer... No tie downs, Temp plates, and not even a map! The five of us spend the next four to five hours prepping the trailer and loading everything up. It's now dark and come to find out the rear axle was empty of gear oil.... Yikes! The differential cover was dented at the filler bolt and was causing it to leak... We filled the rear of oil.. and did an emergency repair hoping it would make the 6000 mile trip west and back!. He was ready to leave on a 3000 mile journey w/o a map! Luckily enough I had planned ahead and printed door to door to door directions printed for him and in a ring binder to make it very easy for him.... Jason finally left my place around 7:30 pm eastern time and drove straight through to Rodney's house. (did you forget he worked from 5am sunday morning)?

It was 815 miles from my door to Rodney's and Jason didnt miss a beat. He arrived monday morning around 8am if I remember correctly.

John and myself called Jason several times to make sure everything was going well and maybe to keep his spirits up since he was driving this distance himself.... (his co-pilot didnt have a license) Around noon on Tuesday I called jason and he was approximatly 75 miles into Nebraska and this is where things got ugly! Not to long after I talked to him they pulled off to check the rear end and found the whole front of the trailer covered in tranny fluid! He limps off the highway to a dealer and they tell him they wont be able to look at it until the next day.... He gets back on the highway to the next dealership.... After a quick diagnosis they find that the tranny housing split and needed a new tranny! Jason ended up buying an 04' x-cab Duramax 2500 and continued on his journey! He is now almost 10-12 hours behind and it doesnt even slow him down...He drove the last 1300 miles non-stop and into Vegas on Wednesday mid day. I think he made the 2900 mile trip w/ under 6 hours sleep.....

John (jkjk) and his brother Joe arrived in Vegas sometime around noon, and Rodney (fixitrod) was showing up around 2pm. Ben B (BenBB) was there to pick them up at the airport and bring them to the Silverton hotel/casino for a good nights sleep. They all decided to hit a local store for food, ice, beer (necessities) and ended up at the titty bar for a few hours. A 45 minute trip ended up 5 hours of fun.

On thursday morning we all met at a truck stop-gas station so those that didnt know their way could save 30+ minutes with the shortcut instead of going through Baker. There was a fairly large group of us since Ash (lvraptorrider), his wife Bobby, kids and his Father. The short caravan of trucks was led by Terry over some incredible peaks and through some beautiful valleys.

Sometime mid day we all arrived at Camp.... The boys from back east almost soiled their shorts when they saw the rolling hills and piles upon piles of sand. I think it took the guys about 5 minutes to unload the trailer, and start their bikes. Not long after they were back for jetting changes and we were about ready to hit the dunes ourselves... The dunes were beyond what I expected.... While Dumont isnt that big... you wouldnt know it by the way Howard, Terry or Mike leads the pack... The weather was about as nice as anyone could ask for.... Thursday night the wind picked up,,,, It helped dry the dunes and make them virgin again for us friday morning. By saturday/sunday the dunes were dry and perfect. The east coast boys had spent half their time wrenching and tuning. (it was a very good thing I always bring spare parts) Everyone rode as hard as they could for as long as they could hold on. No one crashed and no one had any major motor problems. While Glamis is much larger in size.... I personally like Dumont more. The dunes are predictable, but at certain times of day go to a dangerously flat look. We had the dunes to ourselves most of the weekend and late saturday picked up the most. Still nice to have the dunes almost to ourselves.

Some of the weekends most memorable moments are as follows but in no certain order

***

Saturday; On one of the fast dune rides when there were about 25+ riders (maybe closer to 35+) we were all hauling ass when I noticed Jason about 2/3's of the way back and charging hard! Within about 5 minutes he was trying to swap chrome w/ my swingarm... He passed me and charged to second in line within a few minutes.Dont get me wrong... Were not out there racing by any means, but no one normally gives up their spot in line without a fight. Did I forget to mention he was running his DIRT tires! Not a paddle or front dune tire on the bike.

***

Also on saturday I was given a ride in the blue long travel that came with Dallas.... It was nothing special.. just an 80,000.00$ long travel w/ a 525hp LS1 motor. We took a dune ride (Doug-aka-Guido) and the owners of the rail... Our trip across the flats where everyone camps he went through 3 gears hitting roughly 85mph w/o even trying and he had PLENTY more to go. Not once feeling a bump. When climbing the steepest hills my ears popped as if I was in an airplane... A ride I will always remember.

***

Saturday night around the campfire...... Ahhhh Where do I start? Mike and his sheep,,,, Kimmy and her 6' blow up penis.... Just when I thought the entertainment was over... I went to bed only to find out that Kimmy and Dallas rode around camp on the 70's jousting everyone and everything w/ her new toy, they then ventured over to Sierrabanshee's camp attacking them too. I only hope those photos surface soon <g>

***

Meeting everyone again and also finally meeting some new faces... It was nice to finally put a face to a name, and roosting those that I already knew :)

***

Beating Howard's little honda by five or six bike lenghts

***

Perry's GREAT cooking w/ some incredible side dishes... The meals were something that still make me drool when I think about them.

***

Being kicked out of the photo shoot from the "Bling Bling" boys because the half naked woman didnt want a bunch of guys watching....? Only having to return an hour later so they could take pics of my shee.... Something is just a little odd here.. hehe

***

Knowing that the ONLY wrenching I did on my shee all weekend was a front sprocket change, and also having almost every nut, bolt, washer, o-ring or oddball item needed by someone in camp....

Sorry for the long drawn out post... but I thought I would share my thoughts, feelings and experience w/ the trip of trips. I could add more... but most of you would probably ignore me anyways. Anyone care to add their own??

A very IMPORTANT and very special THANK YOU goes out to Terry, Howard, Jason, John K, Papa Perry and Kimmy (for the entertainment)

I'll just add it was the best damn dune trip I've ever done. I've never had more fun riding, drag racing etc. Never been in a dune train that long, and not have anyone get lost and break the dune train up. Never been around that many people willing to help out, shoot the shit, etc ever. I can't wait until the next one!!!!

:whoa::whoa::whoa: that is dedication!!

If things work out in my favor, i.e. time and money, I would love to go on a trip with you guys!

Denny:

It took me most of yesterday to type up.... between interruptions (wife and kids) and also going to meet John (JKJK) to go get my shee. There is so much more that I would like to have added but I had to stop somewhere...

As for who was "king" of the hill.... That would depend on who was racing...

Not to sound like I am bragging.... but I kicked ass on the hill. I think I only lost one race because of a very bad start. Who else was kickin ass..... Lets see if I can sum this up.

Fixitrod;

He was having some troubles launching, but once he hit the hill he was hauling! He needs a longer swingarm with the paddles he has... Once he was on the face of the hill he would catch and pass most everyone

Banchetta;

With his new motor and a -2 swingarm IF he could get out of the hole and across the whoops he would do very well, EVEN with his dirt tires! Im sure w/ a stock swingarm, diff paddles and a gearing change he would have kicked some ass as well. I think he even beat a 250r atc several times too, as with several other bikes.

I cant even remember who else was placing where.. I know Stan, Ben, John, his brother Joe and several others raced a lot.... I just dont remember how everyone did and who they raced against. They also did so many changes w/ gearing, jetting, and clutches(springs), that I couldnt tell you who won and when or how many times.

Hopefully Rodney, Jason, John or anyone else can give their side of the story here...

To make it short, I raced about 20 different times or so, lost every single one, except for the 2 where I started on the left hand side where the whoops weren't so tall. I'd grab a good 3rd gear start, and if everything lined up it worked out. Mostly I was lining up against much faster bikes, so mostly I was there for the experience since I hadn't really drag raced like that before. Most of the time here I line up against 1 bike, and I usually know if I can beat him or not.

The one funny thing that happened is when I was trying out BenBB's trick he uses. He lets the clutch just barely grab to take the slack out of the chain, then holds his rear brake. I did it, and just as I dumped the clutch, pinned the throttle and released the brake I stalled in almost the same spot where I started. I moved about a foot. LOL

Walts bike was fast. Thats about all there is to that story. Every race I saw him take the lead. I didn't see the race he claims he lost. :headbang:

Until I get more time here's the short version:

I had the time of my life at Roostfest; awesome sand hills, excellent weather, meeting the coolest people (and riding, racing, wrenching & hanging out with them). The dune train was a blast, even when I was getting blasted (thanks b370 and fixitrod!), so was night riding with Justintoxicated, tray surfing with Indubitably, carving some bowls with Wallrat, Stan, and JKJK, ingesting Banchetta's antifreeze (cough), talking Glamis with Yamahammer, following evil in the rail, riding with everyone (not sure if I got out on a ride with mrmatt or not), and shooting the hill. And the topless dancers in Vegas were damn nice too. All in all it was unforgettable, and I cannot wait for the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a great amount of respect for Jason.... I dont know how he did it... but he did! Nothing went easy at the beginning of this trip.... John, Joe and myself had a few sleepless nights up until we knew Jason made it... He has such a carefree attitude you dont know what is going to happen next.... Just when you think the shit is about to hit the fan.... he pulls through.

John was having some tuning issues on saturday (I think that was the day) and he looked like he was about to have a heart attack.. Jason stepped in and said... Take a break... He hopped on it... took it for a spin, came back messed w/ the jetting some... took another spin... messed a lil more... He told John "Just ride it and stop f'n w/ it"

BenBB:

I think thats the only "antifreeze" that will remove paint! As for the topless dancers.... I dont think Jason is complete until he has visited a strip bar in a new state :cheers::yank:

Stan:

What makes you think the paint I sent you wouldnt hold up? My bike took a SERIOUS beating and I only found one small chip. But you have to understand... I got stuck behind Bansheequeen in a wash when she roosted the living shit out of me... I guess I'm lucky thats all I ended up with. My guess is your brother in law did what he was supposed too...

As for the video.... Ive seen it... :dance::whoa::dance:

I'll leave it at that

I took on quite a bit of sand, and more than once on the way back from Comp through the whoops, I got belted with rocks and pebbles.

My brother in law assured me it would hold. I'm definitely not a painter. I was babying the hell out of my stuff when I first got it, and my brother in law told me "You can handle those parts you know. Hell I bet you could pressure wash it and get away with it".

My last paint was Rustoleum and Krylon, not ICI. lol.
