Starting Problems After New Ignition Installed

Recommended Posts

im trying to figure out were to start so here it is.my shee is a 97,but some on before me put a 96 ignition and i didnt know it.so when i ordered my dyna box i bought a 97.got the box whent to install it didnt work.ok istead of cuting the dyna up i got a 97 and newer wirng harness.ok,put the new harness on,and at the same time put a ricky stator on.on the wiring harness didnt hook up any of the tors system, but i did connect the red and black key switch wires together, cause i dont have a key switch that works.got every thing together and it fires up with almost a half a kick but only runs for for a few seconds.every time i kick it over it sounds the exact same way.almost like the ignitions getting shut down at the same rpm.the bike ran like a champ before all of this.the only thing i can come up with is the parking brake switch, and the key switch.in the wiring diagram for a 96 it has the key switch to be a closed circut to run and for a 2001 it has it open to run?/?im stuck with this.sorry for the novel just trying to decribe my pain the best i can

The 97+ harness has a key switch that is closed to run. Meaning that wire(red/black on the stock harness, purple on the dyna harness) needs to be tied to ground to run. The dyna box will fire over a few times if you try to kick start it with the key off, but it will shut off after a few revolutions, which is what you are experiencing. This circuit is seperate from the handlebar mounted kill switch, which needs to be left open to run.
