I Need Help!

Well i am a soon to be owner of a banshee hopefully within the next month or so and i was wondering what the real duty and purpose of reeds are. I know about everything else having to do with the banshee but i don't seem to understand how reeds work and what they're purpose is. Also i've seen in my research that there are different types of reeds such as carbon fiber reed and so on what is the difference. Pretty much i just want any information that can possibly help me understand them?

Well, what the reeds do is keep the intake air from blowing back through the carburators. Thay are a one way valve and allow air to go in, but not out. Diffrence between carbon fiber reeds and standard reed is the stiffness of the reeds. A stiff read will allow the motor to make more power because it will keep more air in the engine and less prone to floating. Carbon fiber reeds are are stiffer and so like a stiffer spring on a valve in 4 stroke, allow more air to stay in as the reed is less prone to floating. Carbon fiber reeds also last longer then standard reeds. Like a valve spring..if it's too stiff it will just impede air flow and rob power.

Thanks Motul...So is there anything i need to do before i get aftermarket reeds? Or can i do it on a stock motor if i wanted to?Also do you have any experience with Toomey Pipes and CPI Pipes? I've read great things about both but theres about a 100 dollar difference and i don't want to spend it on the CPI's if there is no major difference. Thanks again.

Go ahead and put on the reeds, it will help. I don't have any experience with the top end pipes. The CPIs put out a little more power from what I gather, but that's all I can tell. I'd say get the Toomeys and save the dough for your next mod.

Yep thats the thing most of my riding is just trail riding on my property and maybe some drag racing here and there. But other than that not to interested in MX just want something that can rip on the pavement whenever a challenge appears. I think ima go with the Toomeys i've heard them before on another shee and they sound really good and have heard only good things about them..although i also heard that the CPI's provide more top end for the shee than the Toomeys but i don't know if that is a fact or what.

Then get some FMF Fatties or Paul Turner mids. Toomeys and CPIs are great pipes but they have their place, and I'd say that's not on the trail.

I run toomeys. My Shee likes to be ridden hard and wide open. If it ain't on the pipe it isn't making any real power. I race MX and it requires a lot of clutch work to keep her where she makes the most power. I've the same set of pipes for over 4 years now and the only problem I have had with them was a broken stiger hanger and a cracked pipe bracket. Not bad for 4 years of abuse.
