Ducman Posted March 3, 2004 Report Share Posted March 3, 2004 I think that in the sand, the outerwear keeps much of the sand from sticking to the K&N filter and the sand just sort of falls into the botom of the air box which creates less maintenance VS the sand sticks to the foam pretty easily. However in my opinion, and I no some other people a adimate about this, foam filters filter the fine particles out of the air way better than the K&N's which is why they restrict flow more than the K&N. With any filter you should clean it after a trip to the doons so in that case maintenance doesn't make much difference. I personally wouldn't run a K&N unless I wanted to run the bike hard enough to require a rebuild once a year or more, are stricktly interestood in drag racing or want to make the most power and wanted to take the risk, but I'm sure many will dissagree. I want my motor to go a few years between top ends and I am not looking to squeeze every ounce of power I can out of it. I think that you can't get a more reliable filter than a good foam filter. Also with the foam outerwear you can ride one day then pull off the outerwear and the filter will still be perfectly clean beneath the outerwear. Ride the next day with just the filter and it will still filter the air cleaner than the K&N, or clean only the outerwear and put it back on. Bensshee Posted March 4, 2004 Report Share Posted March 4, 2004 I used to run a prodesign foam filter in the airbox with no lid for years at the dunes and never had any problems with sand getting sucked in the motor. Filters just as good & it's easier to maintain & clean. I've always like the uni, and I think it filters better, being that it's easier to clean, makes it easier to get it oiled right. I just didn't know if these K&N guys had something regarding the dunes. I'm keeping with my uni, because that's what I like and I don't want to change my flange. I've never had any trouble with the K&N in the sand. i would disagree, the whole purpose of a foam filter is to prevent dirt & sand. k&n's almost work to good, they are like vacuums.for anyone who neglects to clean there filter properly. k&n is def. not the way to go .. The filter I run is 4" OD by 14" long, the biggest one K&N makes, and it's still restrictive on the flow bench compared to no filter, but out flows any foam filter we tested (uni, twin air, etc...) they are like vacuums no, the engine is the vaccum.You are entitled to your opinion, I simply stated wht I like and what works well for me in an effort to help Shredih make an informed decision, re-read your post Reas11 and perhaps yopu'll see it does not make sence.
