biloximan Posted February 25, 2004 Report Share Posted February 25, 2004 guys i was talking with my cousin and i came down to deciding on a banshee two-stroke and he told me dont get one they gotta be rebuilt every 40 hours or so i've never owned anything besides a car so i'm not sure if he is pulling my leg and talking out his behind. I told him that had to be ridiculous.... is this true? or is he way off? can anyone clear this up for me? because i'm dead set on getting a quad to ride once in awhile maybe 12 hours total our of a week how long can i ride on a used one before it needs to be rebuilt? and what exactly do they do in a rebuild. any info is much appreciated i'm dead set on getting a reasonable good condishioned banshee to ride for kicks. evil Posted February 25, 2004 Report Share Posted February 25, 2004 i put about 3 hard riding/racing years on one of my ported motors and just recently tore it down to do a rebuild on it. my 94 has very little hours on it and has never had a top in on it, that motor is now in my 01 and after the dumont trip i might consider a top end depending on the compression. I agree. I have a '97 with the stock top-end still, still 150lbs compression on each cyl. If shit happens, fix it...if it don't, ride the damn thing. I did a topend (FYI biloxi a "topend" is regular maintanence on a 2-stroke; consisting of new pistons, rings, and boring the cylinders) after I had my '96 for about 2 years, I put about 200 hours on it and no tellin' how many hours the previous owner put on it. I've put another hard 100 hours on it since, including MX, TT, and desert racing and the compression is still holding up perfect. Bottom line, take care of it and it'll last... I have a 95 that was on the stock top end...the only resaon it was bored was because I got it ported. Bottom line...just like anything else you abuse you lose..... Take care of it.....and you should get years of enjoyment. P.s. Think about it if you had to rebuild every 40 hours of riding...you would only be getting about 3.5 weeks of ride time per topend. Does that sound logical ? " I think what they really mean is "dont buy a banshee because I dont want you smoking me on a 17 year old quad".. Can I get an amen?? In a nutshell the banshee bashers are ones who have either owned one and knew nothing about it or a friend of a friend of my cousins had one that blew up. I get so frustrated when people say banshees dont hold up. Mine is a 2000 and has had absolutely zero problems AND the poor thing had 10w30 used for the premix for about 6 months (my 12 year old nephew need I say more...) BlueBansheeTwin Posted February 26, 2004 Report Share Posted February 26, 2004 lemme tell ya a little story, i just rebuilt my 99 banshee. its cylinders were down to 105 pounds in one cylinder and 120 in the other.... funny thing is it would still toast a craptor.... now had my engine not sucked dirt, it would have been fine. just run it man. btw, just thought i'd tell you all cuz i'm beaming with excitement, i just got my banshee rebuilt after not riding it for 2 months... and it rips! new clutch, port and polish, boost bottle, milled heads, and a .20 over bore. its mint! plus i removed 5 years worth of built up grease. bignasty1 Posted February 26, 2004 Report Share Posted February 26, 2004 my buddy is one of the worst bike beaters i have ever seen he's got a banshee that he just regular maint. on it ex oil changes fresh gas air filters...... and his bike is 3 yrs old stock pictons rings and all and untill my bike started to be parted out we rode every single day and he beats the damn thing. needless to say but it has only lost 3 lbs of compression in the yrs that he has had it runs strong and fast. banshee's are pretty reliable as long as ur not a ass and dont take care of basic things.
