Some friends and I might be making a trip out to Oregon for a friends wedding.I was wondering how many different places there are to dune. What kind of equipment do we need,i know flags are a must but what about spark arresters. Also would i be ok using a stock swingarm just for this trip, cause it would probably be a little while until i do it again. Also does it matter what paddles i use,i've never ridden in sand,so any information would be great.

You need an off road permit and flag. All the dunes have fees and sound restrictions, slightly different depending where you ride. No you don't need a extended swingarm, your stock one will work fine. I'd buy a cheap set of paddles til I figured out what type of dune riding I liked. I have a set of hauler 20-10-8 8 paddle that are about half worn I'd sell for $45 without wheels if your interested. I ran them for awhile then replaced them with extreme haulers.

if you like sand youll love our dunes, we have

windy bay

sandlake

florence

coos bay (north bend)

if i were to choose the best one it would be florence i think in my oppion its the biggest and had the best dunes. sandlake is really really small.

let us all know when your planning on coming down maybe we could have a banshee hq OREGON dunes get together or something

You might want to check out www.dunereview.com and look up St. Anthony, Idaho. From Pennsylvania to Oregon you could plan a route that goes right thru. Big sand and small crowds. Also Christmas Valley, Oregon and Little Sahara, Utah are not too far out of the way if you have the time.

i would stay away from christmas vally. that place is a waist if time compared to sandlake. but i am with mooney, go to florence.

I couldn't agree with you more about christmas valley. I went there with a few of my buddies last year, and what a waist of time. First of is the horrible road into the place. If there is anything loose on your vehicle on the way in, it will probably fall off on the way out. Then there's then dunes themselves, small and very dusty/dirty, it's like riding in powder. :yank:

I would definitely make sure to hit any of the dunes on the Oregon Coast, they all off a little something different. When are you heading out??

Requirements 95 DB or less, Flag, Off road Permit, and a NW Forest pass for the parking lots. Definitely recommend paddles

I like the wihchester bay dunes for the tall hill climbs. It is the only place you can ride all night long at if you want, kinda crazy seeing it has all the tallest doons and drifts, but it is only 5 square miles because they wont let you ride beyond a certain point and no beach access. You can ride from camp to the doons at most of the campgrounds there too. Most people on banshees run haulers. You dont need a strech swing arm unless your making a lot of HP. I was there this weekend and didn't see anybody checking for noise, on a banshee, probably any decent silencer would do, other locations might be different. The sheriff was doing donuts in the sand in the F-150, seemed way cool. At Coos bay (horse falls I think?) you can also ride from your camp to the doons and on the beach and it has a bigger riding area. From Florance (north) to Coos bay (south) approx 120? mile stretch there are many excellent places, you cant go wrong.

I found a good site for requirements on riding in Oregon and lots of other info. On the front of the web page it says that if you are out of state and have a off road sticker issued by that state then you don't need to buy one. Some states require ATV's to be registered others do not. CA does so I can use my CA OHV permit in OR  It gives db requirements for exhaust, 99db in general, 97 for sand lake and 93 for Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. I dont know what the db's are for a typical banshee silencer, but from what I've seen any standard silencer on a banshee will do. Also It says that you are supposed to wear a helmet on a 4 wheeler or 2 wheeler, sandrailers dont, but I saw a lot of people who weren't wearing them on quads. So I'm guessing they don't inforce the rules too strictly. I wouldn't even think of not wearing a helmet, but it looks like fun... untill your head gets squished that is. :shootself:

I haven't seen many tickets for helmet violations but sound is something they can and will get you for here. Usually Sandlake is pretty safe when it comes to sound but i've heard they started checking there too. A buddy of mine got a ticket there last summer ($175). I ran a few months ago with drag pipes, no silencers and didn't get hassled, but I did switch to silenced CPI's.

I think it's 93db for federal parks and 96db for oregon state parks, but the only people that seem to know where the boundaries are is the guys handing out the tickets. None of our bikes will pass. Most are running CPI inframes, T5's, CPI outlaws (silenced), etc. Your best bet is to avoid the sound cops, they usually hang out in the parking lots and staging areas.

If you are comming here i'd check out Florence, Winchester Bay, and if you have extra time to kill or like to drag race go to Sandlake (it's small and flat but it's closest to Portland). Keep in mind Florence seems to be the most heavily patroled when it comes to sound in my experiences.
