Cold Garage

Recommended Posts

wellll. i have used a propane heater and it wasnt too bad. they get hot quick and after a few minutes you can shut it off. the fumes arent too bad. i have also used a space heater. they use kerosene for a diesel/gas mix. they smell a little worse and heat quick. now we have a small wood burning stove. it takes a while to get it warm but it doesnt smell or anything. if you can go that route i would. just need wood then. otherwise just get an electric heater. might need a good size one tho.

Hi guys:

Tell me more about your garage. Are you considering a permanent heat solution (i.e. with ducting) or something that is portable and "temporary" (e.g. a propane tank-top heater).

I don't promise to know much about this, but I will be happy to put the time in to learn with you.

Regards,

Bill

I got a torpedo heater that has a blower on it and runs kerosene or deisel fuel. I got it for $150 a couple years ago. Works great and heats like theres no tomorrow. One caution though... Propane, and Kerosene heaters have an open flame which WILL ignite fuel and chemical fumes. So be careful. Even electric heaters heat element could ignite flammable vapors. So what ever heater you use, it's best to run it for a while before you begin any work, especially with flammable vapors, and then turn it off and do your work. And NEVER leave it unattended!

That's what i use, but propane. Not as much of the smell. 150,000 btus will heat a 3000 sq. ft. house, I know because I'm a builder and I also use it for that. Set it on the low setting, and the garage will no longer be cold. Get out the t shirts.

I think I have the same one as Got1Banshee, its either 750 or 1500 watts and the cost was like 12$ at walmart. Heats up my 2 car garage fast but then again Im talking about from like 40 degrees to somewhere in the 70's but for the price you can buy two of them

Yeah man, they work great. All though I think mine was like 20 bucks or so, but it doesn't cost anything to run. Mine stays on 24 hours a day 7 days a week all winter and this is the second winter for it and it has held up great.

I thought about getting the propane torpedo {salamander same thing} but I always run out of fuel on the BBQ on the weekend when the propane place is closed and wind up having to get raped for a "trade a cylinder" at the gas station. 5 gallons of kerosene lasts me forever {don't use it much} and is as easy to buy as going to the gas station for $1.50 a gallon. Besides I've got a tall ceiling in the garage and the fumes don't bother me. If you run the diesel, it smokes a little more but still does ok. One more thing, the electric to run it is insignificant. All its running is a small pump and the blower. Probably less juice than a 1500Watt heater. I gotta tell you 150,000 BTU's is much better than 1500 watts ;)

I was doing the 5 gallon tank deal with my heater and it would last 8 to 12 hours. <_< I ended up getting a 25 gallon, it works much better for me. The diesel is much much easier to get and use, and lasts longer.

my grandfather has a HUGE shop and he heats the whole thing with a wood stove. the weather has been highs in the mid 30's and i worked in the shop in just a t-shirt, it was nice and toaster. propane space heaters also do a good job and heating up large areas if you cant burn wood due to clean air laws or whatever.
