BenBB
Thanks for the link, I sent this to ABC: I was a little concerned about the "facts" presented by your February 19th broadcast. As an avid ATV rider and parent, I found some of the representations made in the Ozzy Osbourne ATV injury segment ridiculous, and completely inaccurate. I own the same ATV that Ozzy had an unfortunate mishap on. It does not wieght 600 lbs, nor is it capable of 150 mph. In fact it is closer to 400 lbs. and it's top speed is less than half of 150 mph. I would like to encourage any media source that attempts to portray ATV's in a negative light to at least make an effort to be accurate. On a side note, I was pleased that for the most part the segment didn't take advantage of the situation and make more inaccurate and ludacris representations about ATV's in general as is all to common in mass media. Would it kill you guys to report on the positive aspects of something for a change, or is that asking too much?
die_infidel
I sent a letter to abc on ozzy's crash. I suggest the rest of you members jump in and voice your opinion on atving. Here's the link: http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/primeti...email_form.html Ok here's what i sent to abc: "I've been a ATV enthusiast for 12 years now rode just about every quad out there and the fastest speed ever reached on a stock atv is 75mph. It is impossible to make a Yamaha Banshee go 150mph when it's top speed is about 73 mph. Also A Yamaha banshee weight with full oil and fuel doesn't even come close to 600lbs. The manual and yamaha's web site shows it around 412lbs with fluids. I was Happy to see though that because of Ozzy's accident on a atv didn't lead to bashing the sport that millions of americans love. One accident here and there due to one's own fualt doesn't over come the mass majority of fun and freedom we have. It takes common sense and practice to ride an atv. Just watch how you present atving or sledding cause if the right people hear what you say based on the minority, we'll have one less sport on the list and so much for "freedom" that we so claim. .
How's this sound? I watched your special with Ozzy on his crash last night and was upset with a few things that we're discussed. I've been riding atv's since I was old enough to hold on to one which is almost 20 years now and have much experience in the field of what atv ozzy was riding. When you showed Jack stating that its a "race bike" that is capable of speeds of 150 mph it started to portray an atv as this crazy machine. And then you backed it up with the comments on how many are killed and injured on atv's every year. You also stated that in the US its a 3 billion dollar industry a year. What you failed to report is that how the use and buying of atv's has dramatically increased in the last few years, and although with more people riding atv's there is going to be more accidents and deaths, the actual percentage rate of accidents and deaths has dropped in the last few years. Our sport is a great sport, and we are trying as hard as we can to preserve our areas that we are allowed to ride in, and there is so many others that have blinders on that only see the bad of our sport, looking for any ammunition they can to take our sport away from us. Please dont give them any more ammunition. It would be great to see a story on the flipside of this. How its a great sport, and it brings families together, and is a way to explore the country. My grandmother and grandfather just last year got to take quads out and get into nature and see how beautiful our country is and took all these pictures. And when they got back they told me they understood now why I have an atv and how much it means to me to be able to go out and explore the countryside with it. It would be great to see a show for once that would support something with our sport, instead of bring up the same bad statistics to bring the sport down. Holyman
Here's what I said... Dear Sirs, I am writing in regard to the show you had featuring the unfortunate accident that Mr. Ozbourne recently had while operating an ATV. I would like to offer some constructive critisizm about your piece and hope that in the spirit of fairness you will meantion some of these point in one of your up coming shows. 1- The Yamaha Banshee cannot achieve the speed of 150MPH. The "expert" that made this unfounded and inflammitory statement completely destroyed the credibility of your show. The actual fact is that the vehicle that Mr. Ozbourne was riding has a top speed of less than 75 miles per hour. This can be proven by anyone who actually rides these machines and knows their potential. I invite you to do even a cursory internet search to prove this fact. May I suggest BansheeHQ.com . This is a website that is supported by enthusiasts of ATVing and specifically the Yamaha Banshee. 2- The show did not bring up any positive side of ATVing. I'd like you to consider the fact that there are millions of middle class working families that use ATVing as a way to enjoy the outdoors and spend quality time with each other. That being said, Mr Osbourne hardly fits the decription of the "average" ATV rider. Without being too derrogitory, I can hardly see that Mr. Orbourne is qualified to operate ANY motor vehicle much less an ATV which requires the rider to be in full control of all of ones faculties. ATVing like the use of any other motorized vehicle can be dangerous when not ridden appropriately. Because of Mr. Ozbournes obvious overuse of narcotics both in the past and likely in the present your show featuring Mr. Ozbourne's accident should have been prefaced with a warning that persons under the infuence of alchohol or other drugs should never operate any machinery. 3- Your story which on its face was intended as a public service warning against the use of ATV's was really little more than optomizing on a popular persons inability to drive under the influence. In the future, I respectfully suggest that you have your research team actually do some research and not rely on the kind of New York Times reporting that has recently brought them so much popularity. I would be happy to offer my services at no charge. Sincerely Dave Kaucnik

gumby
ok i tried to be nice to em Dear Primetime Personal, I recently watched your special of Mr Osbourne and his recent atv mishap. I was very upset that some off the facts you reported on are in fact false, and that your research team didnt take the time to find the truth. 1)The type of atv Mr Osbourne was riding was a Yamaha Banshee which was reported to go 150 mph wich the top speed of that atv in stock form is around 70-75 mph. 2)the weight of the atv is not 600 lbs. as reported it is 386 lbs dry, meaning no gas or oil. 3)You failed to mention that there are many warning and saftey labels on the atv in plain site and in orange and black bold letters, stating this vehicle should not be operated while under the influince of drugs, alchol or other mind imparing substance. 4)The cardnial rule of all helmet, Mr Osbourne was not wearing a helmet which again is clearly stated on the atv warning labels and in the owners manual. The real reason for this letter is to inform you that I/we are part of a dying sport in which we are look down upon and looked at as dangerous people becuase we ride atv's. We have enough trouble fighting fedral atv aws and local laws so we can have places to ride where a family can go for the day and be with other people that share the same interests, but with the news reports that the death total is up from last year you failed to mention that so are the atv sales. All i see anymore on the news is how someone died in an atv accident but what i dont hear is that the person was under the influance of drugs or alchol and they did not have on a helmet. Why dont I hear about the GNCC races on the news (its kinda like a nascar race for atv's) or the family that goes to a local atv park for the day or weekend. I would also like to think that the people at ABC know when they made a mistake and they are willing to admit to it. Thank You Chris Hoven Resources: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/units...atv&cid=1&mid=2 and www.bansheehq.com i think i made it sound pretty good myself
