Chain And Sprockets

My stock chain and sprockets are shot and I need to replace them. I ride 99% in the sand. I will stay with the stock front/rear sprocket ratio. Which is the best setup? Sprockets: Steel, aluminum, stainless? Chain: o-ring, x-ring or no ring? Should I go with a wider-than-stock chain? Price is not really an issue, I just want something that will last. What about maintenance and tightness? Lube or no lube? Basically, if someone out there is a chain and sprocket expert I could use a good lesson.

First off, wider than stock??? :o Do you want the chain to be sliding around on the sprockets, then pop off and crack a case or something?? Stepping up to a 530 setup, maybe.

 

Chain: there are people who run orings, xrings, and non orings. It has a lot to do with personal choice. I wouldn't touch a chain with anything less than 7,000 lbs of tensile strength. The DID Dextreme is referring to is 8,100 lbs. A non oring has less drag than an oring, and an oring has less drag than an xring. A non oring should wear faster than a oring, and an oring should wear faster than an xring. Get the picture? The drag is unnoticeable, well, to me anyway. I have more fear of cracking a case than I do, noticing a little drag. I run a Renthal R3 oring chain. There are some nicer chains out there, like the DID Xring, but it works for me. I'd recommend an oring or xring, other than that, its a lot of brand favortism. You can't go wrong with DID and Sidewinders.

 

Sprockets: I'd stay away from Aluminum, unless you like them to wear. Stainless is the shiz, but also costly. For the sand, you want a non-sticky lube. Maxima Chain Wax, is the ultimate shiz when it comes to chain lube/seal. It isn't sticky and is perfect for sandy conditions. If you have a sticky lube, it will almost help wear in sand, cause it sticks to the chain. I always buy the cheapest steel sprockets I can find, JT comes to mind. If you like bling, then stainless is sweet, and Sidewinder can hook you up there to, I believe.

 

For tightening, you want your full weight on the back and about an inch or so of play. Some go inch and one half of play, with your weight on the bike.

 

I'm definitely no expert, but thats my opinion. I did a search and found a few topics for you to read. Try searching and you'll find all kinds of shiz.

Maxima Chain Wax, is the ultimate shiz when it comes to chain lube/seal. It isn't sticky and is perfect for sandy conditions. If you have a sticky lube, it will almost help wear in sand, cause it sticks to the chain.

 

I like the Honda pro chain lube way better than the wax. I even got someone from sidewinder to admit it was good stuff when they were trying to sell me thiers. (Sidewinder chain lube is great too)

 

If you can't tell, I run sidewinder on everything.

i run DID x ring chains. they seem to last a long time. i run primary drive sprockets from RMATV. fronts are like 7 bucks and rears are about 15. they are cheap but i have had no problems with them. i can buy quite a few of those for the price of one expensive one. i say go for the primary drive, if you break one its really not much of a loss.

Thats where I get a lot of my stuff like that.

The answer to your not-too-intelligent question is no. I thought, obviously incorrectly, that anyone who would read this forum would be smart enough to know that I will be replacing both sprockets and the chain with matching parts.

 

I guess I need to specifically state that I an planning on putting the big sprocket in the back and the small one in the front so guys like you will understand.
