I built a website for my construction company on Adobe GoLive, and it's pretty well finished, but I don't know how to transfer it to the web. I have the domain name reserved with Network Solutions. Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks,

Scott

First you'll need a place to put it.

You'll need to purchase space and bandwidth on a shared or dedicated server at a data center. There's tons of places. Try a web search for web storage or collocation.

Whatever place you decide to go with will have DNS servers where you can associate your new domain name with the IP address they give you. They can help you create those records.

Once you have all that, it's just a matter of transferring your files up to that server.

Your data center will give you an ftp access account with which you can transfer files via ftp to their server where they are then visible to the world.

Tons of free ftp clients too. Look up shareware for ftp.

Some web editors like front page etc have capabilities aimed at eliminating that last ftp step, yours might as well.

I find it easier without all that crap.

Sweeeeet. I think I got this figured out. Led, thanks for the offer. I got my web hosting info from ValuWeb, then got the domain pointed to the ValuWeb servers and then found all the info on transferring the ftp files. Tomorrow the transferring of files will begin. I'll show you guys the finished product tomorrow. You can make fun of my first site.

Thanks again for the help, you guys got me pointed in the right direction, most definitely.

Alright, I'm logged into my ftp server, gonna transfer some files. I see like 4 or 5 folders on the server. What folder do I transfer the files into, or where do I transfer them? Do they need to be in a specific folder am I missing something?

The folder shown are (with the subfolders below in ftp):

  • cgi-bin

    ftp
    .bin
    .incoming
    .pub

    htsdata

    logs

I appreciate the help.
