Help With Reeds...

My bike has all stock internals (no porting), FMF Fatty's, K&N, and currently has FMF Ram Valves and I am wondering which would be better:

1. Replace the reeds on the Ram Valves,

2. Remount stock cages with aftermarket reeds, or

3. Port and then remount stock cages with aftermarket reeds.

I ride mostly in the woods with some open fields, so I am looking to increase mid to top and smooth out the hit.

 

Also, what are the benefits, if any, of running Carbon Fiber reeds?

 

What are TDR's (brand)?

 

One more, know of any websites would help me get a better idea of how reeds work?

I don't have an answer for your flow question. I'm not sure reeds will limit the hit of a two stroke either. It may help some. Carbon fiber reeds are stiffer and will generate less flutter at topend but according to some builders I've talked to ... don't last as.

And this link might help understand how the whole two stroke works. Basically when the motor pulls vacuum for fuel they open, when there is compression in the cylinder, they close. That's it. The thinner they are, the easier they open, but can flutter on topend because they are weak.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the high-level principles, but don't quite know the affects of different combo's of cages and reeds. For instance, I think that Boysen makes a dual layer reed; with the bottom being plastic (responsive at low-end=more power down low) and the top being CF (less flutter at top-end=up high HP). This seems like it would provide the best of both worlds, but in my limited exerience I have found that when one thing is built to function as two, it does excel at either task. What are your thoughts/what are you running? And thanks again....

I ported my reed cages and replaced my stock reeds with boysen power reeds.

I must say, there is much to be gained from performing this modification. It seems to give me better throttle control/response. It also seems to give my banshee longer legs. However, the powerband on my bike seems to hit harder than ever, but that is what I wanted. To sum it up, performing this mod will enhance the best traits of the banshee, a hard hitting powerband and tons of top end speed.

The total cost was $52 for the power reeds, $10 for dremmel bits. :)

i switched out my boysen reeds for the fmf carbon fiber ones and they seem to be holding their own. crisp throttle, no known flutter on top eighter, but like rod said above and the guy at fmf, they will not last as long :(
