Splitting The Cases...

I am in the process of splitting my cases....

I am at the stage of actually pulling the top off of the bottom. I can see that they have been split before (or so it appears) as I can see grey gasket material coming from between the two halves.

I have all of the nuts and bolts off, but now I need some tips on splitting the two. The cylmer says "hit the large metal bosses with a mallet" I hit what looked like would be safe, but I have not been able to remove the two.

If you guys have any suggestions, pictures, or helpful comments, please share. I searched the forums, but could not find any information.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Fixit,

I took a look at that site, but it didn't really have any suggestions as to getting the cases appart. I do have that small bracket removed that it mentions there, but other than that, I didn't see anything that I had to remove.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks again,

I just split my case about a month ago and used a pair of external snap ring pliers. I just chose places on each side of the case that looked like it was a little thicker aluminum and pried the halves apart working around the case. Do not put the pliers on the flat mating surfaces of the case to pry it open. I am sure somebody will say that this is the wrong way, but it worked for me.

Good Luck with yours.

Flip the cases on their side and put the nuts back on the studs and tap them with a hammer. You might want to put a piece of wood on top of the nuts also to make sure you don't mushroom the studs. Also make sure that everything doesn't fall out of there :D Just tap it to break the seal and then flip it back over and pull them apart.

Thanks for all of the replies guys!

Has anybody else ever done what skykingcory has done?

This seems like what I would try next. I tried the rubber hammer, but I don't want to break or damage anything.

Do you guys think that hitting the bolts will hurt anything?

Thanks again guys!

Tapping on the studs won't hurt anything as long as you are patient and somewhat gentle. Just don't waylay that mother :D Just make sure you put the nuts back on the studs before tapping on them so you don't damage the threads.

Also make sure you have all the bolts out of the cases! It is easy to miss one if you have never split the cases before, and especially if the cases are not perfectly clean. There are quite a few that hold it together.

get the dremel out :D ok dont do that !!! all the cases ive split came apart rather easy with the help of a small mallet and soft blows. are you sure you have all the screws out ?? go over it 50 more times, you shouldnt have to beat the crap out of it to get it split, unless the person that split them before used some jb weld as sealer.
