Half Link Blues!

I had my bike Ported and I am not at 72 hp so I went to a 6" over swingarm. So I go to install the chain and of course I am a link to big or small!!! My question is I can fix this by changing my sprockets I was running the stock gear before the porting 14/41 and now I basically need to got to a 15 tooth front and maybe a 42 or 43 in the rear. The reason why I am going up in the rear is I am not to concernd about top speed I do mostly drag racing anyways. I was just wondering if anybody had any experiences with these gear set ups? I really want to know that with 72 hp is this thing gonna bog down in a 2nd gear launch with a 15/43 I weigh about 210lbs. Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Brian

I wouldn't use a half link. Every half link I have ever saw did not have a hardened pin, but a "sping pin" basically a split roll pin. I was told by someone I trust at the Yamaha dealer that they are illegal to use on street bikes, and he suggested that I do not use it on my banshee.

If you do happen to find one that uses the same pins as the chain, then you are probably going to be okay, but stay away from thin side plates and sping pins.

Half links suck from what I've seen. I hit a jump and split it right in half! Most of the people I've talked to also have trouble from them for some reason. I would try a different sprocket. I tried to put on a different brand of rear sprocket but had the same number of teeth and the chain tension was okay on one, but with the other it was too tight!

Yeah, thats what I heard also. I put the 15 on last night and I was able to get it tight but the adjusters are all the way in now and I have no more adjustment left, so if the chain stretches then I am screwed. but if I go up 1 or 2 teeth in the rear I should be fine, like I said before I am afraid that there wont be enough motor to turn em over!!! What do you guys think?

This is what I did when I had the same problem as you. I changed out sprockets, and the chain was too loose or too tight.

First, I used a die grinder to hog out the little adjusting slots on my stock swingarm.

Then I cut the chain to where it was loose, but I could ride. I then rode it easily(bah I gave it hell!) up and down the street until it started to stretch, about 8 passes or so. Then I cut a link out and it was kind of tight, but not horrible. Then I stretched it out again the same way, and never had a single problem.
