Registration Process

DIRTBIKEZ

Sunday I purchased a 2002 Banshee 3rd hand from a guy in New Jersey. We wrote out a bill of sale because he told me he was never able to obtain a cetificate of origin from the previous owner and that he was told it would be void anyhow. Now I'm trying to register it with New York State and the DMV is asking for transferable registration. What documet should I be looking for for this bike? Did these models come with a Title or other type of official document? I'm getting nervous and questioning myself bigtime.

My '96 also has a normal title. You should be able to call the DMV anonomously and have them run the VIN, just to make sure it's not hot, they may also be able to give you the title holder's address. If all else fails and it looks like it's clean, talk to a used car lot or body shop and see who can file for a "lost title"...

An '02 has a normal title, just like cars and trucks. It would've been issued in the state of first purchase, (unless transferred) and would list the previous owner. The "certificate of origin" they're referring to is the title. I would be making a quick trip to the person you bought it from and if he has no legitimate answer, get the police involved to run the numbers off the bike. It very well could be stolen if they can not present a title.

The guy you bought it from may have been the one that got yanked around by the guy before him, but you need to find out, and if he doesn't know, then the both of you need to get in touch with the previous owner. Get this figured out, or get your money back. Because, at the very least, most people won't buy these without a title, so if you want to sell it in the future, it will be very very hard to sell, if darn near impossible.

Good luck, and I hope it works out.

I feel you pain, I too live in NY and have tried to register an atv with just a bill of sale. All I can say is it is a lost cause. I hear there is a way to get a title but I have never met anyone who has done it in Ny. I personally called many people in albany to get a definite answer and the people upstate said it anint gonna happen no matter what you do. This took me six months to find out and as you know you need to have it registered or a title to get it back if it gets impounded. So What I ended up doing is getting a new frame off ebay that had a title. Hey it took 10 years off my banshee and only cost me 100 because I then sold mine. THis is just another reminder why NY sucks for ATV riders

I appreciate everyones opinions and insight and am happy to see most people have an optimistic look on my situation. I am in contact with the guy who sold me the machine and he is going to get in touch with the dealer and see if they are able to get a new MSO. I did a fairly vast amount of research on the NYS DMV website and came across a few forms that may possibly help me out. They have been printed, filled out and will be mailed to the seller tomorrow. I hope this all pans out... I'll try to keep this updated for anyone whos interested :) .

I don't know how I missed this one. I could have helped you out!!! Anyways, glad to hear you got it straightened out. if the dealer didn't help you out, you probably had to fill out an affidavit of ownership (MV-51) and get the seller to sign it as well. You would also need a DTF-802 which is the statement of transaction, for sales tax. you may have used the MV-51B, which is the affidavit of ownership for non-titled vehicles. That depends on which state youbought the bike in. SOme states do not use titles. NYS sucks that way..... and last but not least, you needed an MV-82, which is the registration application. How does that saying go? I.......... Love New York............ yep, I love it just like I would love to wipe with a broken bottle.... :o:rolleyes:
