KX250
I most gonna buy a brand new shee. Now if I take it home and start fouling plugs whats the first thing to do. If I take it home and ride around slow and let my son ride it. Im gonna do mostly light riding. Friends of mine said you could tune it to run trails and never have a problem. How do I do it?? Well, I wouldn't say the banshee is a lugging machine. If the temp change is drastic, you may have to adjust the jetting a little. Most run between 32:1 and 40:1, and adjust a little due to temp and conditions.
KX250
Well i dont mean 5 mph lugging. I ride mostly trails. I mantain a speed of about 15 to 20 and i dont lets the rpms raise too much. How do i know how much to adjust the setings and how do i know when to do it?? Stuff
If you buy a new 'shee and ride trails just ride it. Most likely the jetting will be good and check your plugs to make sure. I just got my '02 this summer and it is completely stock. I trail ride and it runs great. Just check your plugs out and do the other regular maintenace stuff and you will be alright. If you foul out plugs maybe clean your air filter or run your premix like everybody else has recommended (32:1 to 40:1) Another thing, 2-stroke love the higher RPMs and lugging them may cause the plugs to load up and foul out. sredish
If its stock and you've been running it, and it all of a sudden starts fouling. Chances are, your air filter is full of crap. My 500 4x4 is really bad about that. It has to be sparkling clean or its wanting to foul. I'm in the process of fixing that though. If you have any problems or issues at all, and don't know how. Take it to your local dealer and have them help you. Most decent dealers will help you through it.

Ducman
Typically once you warm the bike up for a couple of minutes and then go to take it for a spin, if it is going to foul the plugs it will happen in the first couple of minutes. If you take it out and never get it in the power band you may foul the plugs although when I was breaking mine in this never happened to me even with 24:1 mixed gas. If you take it out and wind it up a couple of times, do some hard acceleration up through the gears at least 1-3, to get the cylinders good and hot it will clean them out and you can ride it for quite a while without worrying about fouling the plugs. If it starts feeling sluggish or boggy throttle response after a long time of put put, wind it up again and it will clean the cylinders out. As long as the plugs stay at a reasonable operating temp they will self clean unless you have a jetting or too much oil in the gas mix problem. Also keep a fresh set of plugs in a zip lock bag with the tools under the seat. There are tools under the seat to change the plugs. If it gets fouled and you cant start it and clean it out, throw in new plugs, 5 min tops, and your fine again. Plug foulding realy shouldn't be that big of a problem even if you baby it alot on a stock machine unless you have other problems. You are also much much less likely to hurt anything by running it in cold weather on the stock pipes with stock jetting, causing a lean condition, if your just crusing around. If your in the band at wide open throttle for a long time that when things get heated up and melt pistons when your jetted too lean. I wouldn't change the jetting much from stock unless you ride it at 40 degrees and colder or ride it in a location with a major elevation change from where it's jetting is dialed in (1500' or more) unless you really start riding it hard. sredish
Okay so what do you mean by checking your plugs. What do i do if i take it off the tralier and ride it for 5 min. and it fouls? First off, are you having a problem, or are you just worried about it? Second, you shouldn't be fouling plugs. Make sure your air filter is clean first and then, if you are fouling plugs then there is a problem with the jetting. To check the plugs, get on the bike and make sure its at operating temp (warmed up)and run it at wide open throttle to at least 5th gear. I mean totally wide freaking open. Then when the rpms are up pretty good, pull clutch and immediately kill motor. Stop and pull both plugs to see what color they are. They should be dark dark brown, borderline black but not oily. Look for the color past the tip, down inside at the base. If it is really oily and black, then your main jet is too rich, you need to come down a little. If its fine, and your only fouling plugs when idling or 1/4 throttle, then you need to adjust your pilot jet down some and see if that helps. If you have any problems changing the jets or messing with this, then you may have to let your dealer help you with it some, or have a buddy help you and teach you. Third, if it is new and bone stock and your having a problem with fouling, then the dealership should correct that free of charge, it's called warranty. I may have fouled one plug since I've owned it, but I can't remember when, and remember, always carry two extra plugs.
