UpEnSmk420
Quick question. I just pulled off my cylinders so I can port them. I'm just wondering if I should replace anything while Im in there. My bike is an 02 w/ your basic bolt ons and jets and what not. Should I replace the rings or anything? Cylinder walls and everything look good but then again Im not really sure what I need to look for.
checkster
couldnt hurt to re-ring it. unfortunately the best thing would have been to do a leakdowntest before you ripped it apart. have you done a leakdown test on the rings or compression test lately as this would have been a good indicator to do some maintainance while you have it apart. since it apart you could always measure the ring gap that might give you a little info. checkster
UpEnSmk420
No I sure havn't. I guess I just thought that its new enough not to really worry about it. But I should have tested the compression at least. I guess once I get everything back together Ill test it.
checkster
well you could at least measure the ring gap while its apart. place the rings in hte cylinder about 1/3 of the way down the bore and square it up using the piston form the cylinder. check the gap per the assembly manual specs. if the gap is out of spec the rings are worn. hone and replace with new rings. oh yeah check the bore size as well to make sure it in spec. check
Blacksmith
A couple of points: 1) A leakdown test, while good for checking seal and gasket conditions, will not tell you anything about your rings. For that you need to run a compression test. 2) If you have the jugs off of the bike, take the to a machine shop or atv shop and have them checked for taper. If they have less than the allowance in the manual, by all means put new rings on the pistions. 3) If you have had a port job done, I would think that the least they would have done to the bore would be to hone it to remove any stray tool marks. If they did not, I would sure do it before I put my bike back together. Any time that you hone a cylinder you want to replace the rings, and with the exception of a few types of specially lined cylinders any time you change rings, you want to hone the bore. checkster
I have always been under the impression that bringing the piston to TDC and doing a cylinder leakdown test was the way to check piston blow by(on a two stroke) and bring the piston to BCD checks the seals. Am I wrong? Please elaborate. thanks check
Phast
If your going to port the jugs!!!! then you always give it a rebore when your done just in case you hit the walls or somthing, Its just a good idea to anyways!
