mrmatt
I've hit plenty of rocks with my DG skids and they are notfu@ked up yet. If you think you ride harder than me, I doubt it. mrmatt the DG skid is 3/8" aluminum. How thick is the armadillo and how does it mount any differently? You must be riding on some extra rough shit. I won't say that I ride harder than you. I just ride in terrain that is probably rougher than you do. We regularly hit rocks from the size of baseballs to basketballs, but when there are trees on both sides you don't have much choice. A lot of 4x4 quads with independent suspension ride the same trails, which really rut up the trails. For some people the DG type works for them, other people are able to run the stock one for years. But the Armadillo is made from two pieces of extruded aluminum in an L shape that is 1/4" thick and it is the only thing that I will use. Just my $0.02. banshee04le
I try to avoid shit like that, but I might learn the hard way some day. oh yeah wallrat, 3/16"...thats what I meant. 3/8" would be pretty bulletprooof huh?
.
My rims are actually in pretty good shape, usually if I hit something it'll just bend in the lip a little bit and you can beat it back with a hammer. Rolled edge .190's usually hold up pretty good around here, I try to avoid hitting rocks with my tires hence why the skidplate gets so banged up. sredish
What about the Ricochet stuff, anybody using that?
dnhyoung
I've got the prm rear skid plate, as well as the six pick rack, and they fit great, and are tough as hell. Plus the fact that they are right in my back yard so to speak. http://www.prm-atv.com/
.
only negative I had to say about prm that I forgot to add is that the bolts they sent me werent grade 8 and werent long enough. So I got some regular grade longer bolts (only 2 werent long enough) and hit a couple rocks and broke the bolts. So yeah, I ride some rough stuff, enough to break my regular grade bolts. Got some Grade 8's in there now and they still have held up.
04Banshee
Anyone have the AC skid plate? Is it any good?
mrmatt
. if you keep breaking your grade eight hardware, then try grade 5. I'm sure I'll get blasted for this. But in some cases grade 5 hardware is better. Generally speaking the stronger you make steel, the harder and more brittle it becomes. The grade 8 bolts have a higher tensile strength, but they are more brittle, so they break easier. The grade 5 hardware will bend a little bit before it breaks since it is more maliable. This is why you will see a lot of manufacturers use grade 5 hardware on suspensions, such as leaf spring bolts.
.
If I ever break these Grade8's I'll have to look into it, the ones I was breaking were the regular old bolts out of sears hardware. I've broke my skidplate till it was hanging by one bolt twice, and went to the grade 8's and its been good so far.
Big Blue
What about the Ricochet stuff, anybody using that? Yes i have the swingarm skid, i havent really tried it out yet since i just got it for christmas, it looks good, the fit is great, install is simple, price is good and it is a 1/4" thick so im sure it will take a beating. 04banshee in my opinion ac skids are crap i dont think they are thick enough, atleast the one on my raptor is the first ride i had on it the skid bent far enough up to start rubbing on my chain, it gets to be a pain in the ass having to keep bending it back down
nater006
Sorry to bring up an old thread but... I read through this thread a bit ago and decided to order the Armadillo (for the swingarm). It arrived in the mail yesterday and I am very pleased with the sturdy construction Of course, time will tell, but it looks to be a really sturdy product. Just wanted to say thanks! You won't be disappointed. They will include washers with the swingarm to use as spacers between the skid plate and swingarm. Yamaha doesn't hold the skid plate mounting dimensions to very tight tolerances so the spacers may be necessary. Use them if you need. Do not simply tighten the bolts down to close the gap. This will pre-stress the skidplate and bolts which will make it weaker.
nater006
Yep, I saw 'em taped to the skid when I unpackaged it. 1 of the stock bolts is missing, so off to the hardware store for some suitable replacements. Looks like a quality piece of hardware. Doubtful it will be used to the capacity that you folks seem to use it for but at least its piece of mind that it is some good protection.
