BitchenBanshee
OMFG!! I installed a new set of domes on my aftermarket head and when I tried to torque one of the head bolts, it just began to spin out of the cylinder..... There are now no threads left in the hole for the stud to screw into!!! It's the bolt that is closest to the exhaust port! How do I fix this? Is a heli coil the only way???? HELP!! I don't know if this link will work or not... But here it goes.. Edit: Fixed ya up in the pic department. Click the edit button for this post, and see how I did it!! Then, you can post your pics with ease. Edited January 29, 2004 by boonman
ruff_rida69
you might could go to a local hardware store and get a tap and retap it, as far a the heli coil I've never used one but I say a tap is gonna be your easyest and cheapest way to fix it, maybe some body else has some good ideal's

BitchenBanshee
I'm just scared to do it!!! So you are sure that a heli coil will work?
demsy
if you dont wanna do it take it to a machine shop, they will hook you right up. shouldnt be that much either.
Aussie Quad Racer
if you by the proper heli coil kit for it then it will come with the tap and tool to do it. If you have taped a thread befor then you will have no problem installing a helicoil
NYUK
machine shops have solid inserts.a heli coil is a temporary fix.an insert is tapped into the head.i just had one done for reas11.
boonman
However, in softer materials, a heli coil can be beneficial. We manufare our own machinery. In a hole that gets used alot, a helicoil is sometimes installed right off the bat. THey work. We use them all the time. Fixing machines and what not. I owuld have no problem putting a helicoil in there. A solid insert could be put in as well. You would just have to drill the hole larger to fir the insert. SOmetimes, there is no room for it... Cotton eyed Joe
machine shops have solid inserts.a heli coil is a temporary fix.an insert is tapped into the head.i just had one done for reas11. I only have 6-32 and 8-32 I don't have any metric sizes. Im not the biggest fan of the heli coil. I use the thread inserts that have a spanner type drive on them. I guess you can use a common screwdriver to put them in with.
Blacksmith
No doubt, I would put in a heli coil. Installed properly I have never had one fail. If you do not feel comfortable putting it in your self, take it to a shop and have it done. Most will do it for around $20.
fixitrod
I had an insert put in my sons atv's head.. $25. Can't beat that
BitchenBanshee
Well This makes me feel better!!! I'll see if I can find a place that will do it... It sounds as if a heli coil is better to do now, then if that fails put a solid insert in it. The hole drilled for the heli coil is smaller than an insert correct? boonman
I have all kinds of metric sizes. And yea, the solid ones can be pit in with a screw driver, and then you hammer down the pins to lock them in place. But, they can, and have worked loose on me. I don't trust those as much as I would a helicoil...
reas11
get the insert its a sure fix , do u want to break down next time out ? because u went the cheap way ...
BitchenBanshee
Ok, I got a hold of Dan at Patriot.. He recommends the solid insert way, I'm just gonna send the cylinder to him to take care of it!!! (At least I got someone to bitch at if it doesn't work!!!) Thanks again all!!!
