hops
After reading the other 4mm stroker posts, I have come to the following conclusion, please verify if I'm wrong or right. 1.After paying for a new or modded crank, I will still have to pay the $300_$400 for a port job. I was hopin to get the crank, go 1 over on the pistons, new head, reeds/cages, advance timing, lighten flywheel, etc., but wasn't ready for the added cost of porting. 2.I'm not looking for a race port, so would most shops reduce the cost for making the ports match the new setup? 3. Also, the local shop I talked to wants me to change to "TZ" crank bearings, put a bearing in the clutch case for the ball to ride on, and basically machine off 50% of the "splines" off my tranny gears (more like a honda tranny)(These are my interpretations) All this sound OK, or bad idea, or?? I was just hopin to open the case once, gain some torque with the crank, then I could always upgrade the port work, carbs, and such as I feel I need it. Any ideas? After installing the crank, you will need machine work to compensate for the added stroke on either side of the cylinder. (top and bottom) The top neds to raise the domes 2mm, and the bottom, you will have to port it to get it correct. 2.I'm not looking for a race port, so would most shops reduce the cost for making the ports match the new setup? Yes, most shops will cut the cost down considerably to match everything. However, I would get it ported for your riding. You will like it better in the end.,.. The TZ bearing is a very good idea, for reliability purposes. It is a much better unit. The bearing is another excellent mod. (for the clutch). If you have ever heard of anyone welding the clutch ball to the rod, it is not a fun thing to have happen. it's only $40, and I would do it. On the tranny thing. I wouldn't be machining any splines off of anything. Splines are what hold the gears on the shaft and do not alow them to rotate. If you machine them off, than you will likely strip either the gear or the shaft. Not a good thing. I can't imagine why you would want to do that. And what is this Honda tranny thing? DOn't know where you're going with that one either? I do believe that you meant that you want to machine the engagement dogs off of the gears themselves. Yes, that is a good mod. Makes shifting a fun thing. And missed gears go out the window.... I was just hopin to open the case once, gain some torque with the crank, then I could always upgrade the port work, carbs, and such as I feel I need it. Any ideas? You can upgrade the port work, prettty much anytime you want. Splitting the case open isn't a hard thing to do. I don't know why peeps dread it soo much. If you can afford the stroker, do it. hops
Thanks a whole bunch. Yup, your right about the engagement dogs, just couldn't remember how the builder put it. Now all I have to do is go over what all I want, and see what it's gonna cost. Any other input would be great, also. Just wanna make sure I don't waste any money. I trust the builder, so far, but one never knows. Another question, is boring stock carbs ok for a mild build? Its half price of new carbs. boonman
Another question, is boring stock carbs ok for a mild build? Its half price of new carbs. Indeed. It is a good idea. 28mm's can be had for around $200. The choice is yours. But, if you're riding trails and what not, bored stockers are the way to go... Banchetta
My friend has his dogs cut and I was going to do the same, but it takes alot of life out of the gears....might want to consider that...
mcaf29
I'll just tell you what I did and take it for what it is. I bought a 4 mil LR stroker and dropped it in with the 7mm Vito's plate (only $80). This let me run my regular Vito's power pistons without any modifications. It ran really nice with my 2 into 1 setup. It definately had more lowend than before and it had pretty good topend too. Like everone else I think you should do the porting now if you can. The reason I went with the plate was I didn't want to buy new domes, new pistons, and porting right after dropping almost $400 on the crank. It was definately the right decision, I got 3 months of good riding out of it and now that i have some more money to play with so I'm getting the porting done. I'll hopefully sell the plate on ebay and get some of the money back. Again if you can afford the almost $1000 startup cost go with the porting now but if you are like me you can spend $400 now then when you got another $400 you can port later.
