bigtreads Posted January 20, 2004 Report Share Posted January 20, 2004 I just aquired a set of 8 paddle haulers that are 18" tall. Will the small size cause problems bottoming out while play riding ??? I used to have 20x11x10 sand skate 2's - so in order to compensate for the smaller tire what size should I go on the countershaft sprocket. I was running a 14 tooth. My motor has basicly every bolt on (midrange pipes) but no porting. I don't live anywhere near the sand so I'm trying to plan things out a bit for our dune trip at Easter. spoin39 Posted January 20, 2004 Report Share Posted January 20, 2004 I don't think the bottoming out is the problem. 18" paddles don't hook up because of their size and it changes the gearing alot (less top-end) which is usually bad for the dunes. Wallrat Posted January 20, 2004 Report Share Posted January 20, 2004 Smaller tires tend to dig in the sand more. For example, picture rolling a golf ball across the sand. Now roll a basketball, which will go further? I'd say just grab a 15tooth front sprocket before you go to the dunes, I'm sure it'll be fine. Justintoxicated Posted January 20, 2004 Report Share Posted January 20, 2004 I have the skat track mohawks and I no longer really like them, In a drag they are fine, but I find them digging too much in the dunes. I have almost ate it a few times because of how bad they dig in. Better than stockers I guess, but not what I want anymore...I think im going to go with ITP's all the way around, if only someone could verify they are better than the Skate 2's or even sand tires unlimited all the way around... I just don't think Skat-Tracks are my thing, I know so many people who have bought them and hated them because they fall apart, in comparison to sand tires unlimited...... DUNEDEMON Posted January 20, 2004 Report Share Posted January 20, 2004 I'll chime in, I have the new ITP sand stars front and rear, and love them. Keep in mind I don't go to the dunes to drag race, I go to ride in the dunes. I used to run mowhaks in the front (single rib) which performed better than the stock tires, but they don't even come close to the performance of the sand star fronts (dual rib), the dual rib design allows for great response without "digging in". Many people have opinions on rear paddle tires (straight vs "V" shaped paddles) here's mine. I ran skat-trak haulers and edges for the last seven years, for all out dune riding fun I prefer a "V" shapped paddle, they do turn easier at slow speeds, and allow you to throw the bike around more. You can over come this with a srtaight cut paddle with a little body english and a fist full of throttle, (if you are looking for the straight line (hill shooting) performance that a straight cut paddle provides), but out in the dunes on long rides a "V"shaped paddle is easier to ride at any speed and less tiresome too. For what it's worth, the group I go to the dunes with all used to run skat-trak paddles, after each of them riding my bike with the new sand stars ALL of them (12 bikes) have switched to the sand stars. Try a few launches in 2nd and it should tell you pretty quickly if you need to change your gearing.
