littlemikey4u
I just took mine to a local starter and alternator shop for cars and they charged me 60 dollars to fix it with a 3 month warranty.
Nighty
Hey JTquad, Yes all the raptors i have seen here. About 10 by now from friends and riding mates eventually got starter problems. Especially the first models of the raptor have this problem. a rebuild kit here in the netherlands costs around 600$. since a week 3 of my riding mates exchanged there banshees for raptors. 1 had a broken starter when it came. we knew that and the dealer gave us a new starter. The other 2 raptors are brand new 2003 models. A list of things we created to prevent this problem: *USE the exact original oil filter!!! The dealer once gave us a set of what looked like raptor oil filters but they where slightly longer. after a while the trouble began. and it turns out that the longer oil filter reduces the oil pressure significantly resulting in a lack of oil in the raptor head. *Keep your oil level high and clean it regually (tap old oil and put in new oil) *Always start with your lights off *Try to always start the raptor in neutral. Oh and also! make sure your idle isnt set to low!! (like its almost stalling each time.) A high idle is oki! That about covers it. and i'm affraid you cant repair your starter and will need a new rebuild kit. I am really currious how long the new raptors will last.. Thumper69
You need to make sure it's the starter and not the starter clutch, 99% of the time here it's the one way bearing and starter drive gear. We had a no less than 20 do it in the last year. When you get it repaired make sure you idle it up to 1000 rpm's are you will be in the same boat again. Most that have the problem are the ones idled to low and when you kill it the motor kicks back and over time it will DESTROY the gears and bearings. Yamaha sent us out a factory tech to show us about it so idle em up and good luck. Have your dealer contact Yamaha, most ofthe time when we call they will repair the earlier models on good faith because they know they had a problem, and if the dealer laughs then your dealing with someone who doesnt care because they cover all kinds of stuff for us that they honsetly shouldn't but then again we have a lot of happy customers because of it. Big Blue
the problem should be with the starter clutch mine went out and it was going to cost me around $300 to get it fixed at the stealership, by buddies started going bad here recently and he found a aftermarket place that is selling the main part that goes bad and is supposed to a better part with a 1 year warranty i think. i will ask him tonight when i see him and find out where it is an post it tomorrow morning. boonman
Well, I go out to the garage. I throw a leg over the Raptor. I turn the key, I hit the button, and nothing happens. Then, my legs get tired, and I fall down from trying to start it. (standing in mid air like I am sitting on a wheeler will do that to you). I like to make like I am a mime or some shit sometimes. See, I don't really own a raptor. I doubt I ever would. Now, a 450 on the other hand, that I would consider...
