One More Death On An Atv

Recommended Posts

It happened again, another person dies on an ATV. Sunday in NE Ohio a 14 year old girl died after losing control on a road and running into a tree. According to the news report she was an experienced rider. Her passenger was severely injured. Both were not wearing helmets.

Note to all:

1. Wear your helmets!

2. Don't ride double.

3. This sort of thing can happen to anyone at anytime.

An experienced 14 year old riding double on the street. Truth in reporting just went out the window <_<

to tehm man experienced means she ran the thing around the yard for a year or so. experienced is KNOWING AUTOMATICALLY that the things are only as safe as the idiot riding them. if this girl was so experienced she would have thrown her helment on. driving on a road is illegal id throw on a helment in that situation just in case th epopo come around a corner and anil you for driving ont he road your gonna be in even more shit without helments RIDING DOUBLE for that matter. stupid

Funny you don't hear about the "kid poisoned from the yard pesticide" or "kid gets fingers cut off in Lawn Boy" or "kid chokes on BMW keyless remote".

I think most of these problems/media coverage are caused by self righteous yuppies who don't have anything else to do.

I hear ya Holyman....it's BS! <_<

Maybe they oughta take a stab at the parents who let her take off on the ROAD, WITHOUT protection,...2 of them at that. Wonder if they read the warning labels on the atv before they took off?!?

At least they threw this in...helps us at least....shows that suprivision, protection & proper riding instruction can prevent stupid shit like this from happening.

"My son is nine-years-old and I have a throttle limiter on the gas so he can only give it so much gas," Mahon said. "But I'm constantly watching him and I also make him wear helmet, gloves, boots and chest protection."

i might get bitched at for this but:

im 18, i wear a helmet 90% of the time but at the dunes when i am going out to take pictures and putting around in MAYBE 2nd gear, i dont bother with a helmet...

i just bought my first pair of riding boots, pants, chest protector after 12 years of riding...

i can probably say im experienced enough to know my limits too...

i really dont think it was a matter of how experienced she was (if she had ridden for 1 year or 30 years)...seems a little weird for just saying an experienced rider ran into a tree...she could have quite possibly been showing off for her friends and lost control...it says it in the owners manuals (yes i read that) that riding doubles can throw off the center of gravity and general control over the vehicle off...

i think it's a little deeper than simple carelessness of not putting on a helmet...

sorry if this doesnt make sense i just woke up lol and that's my $.02

Man, all this shit really pisses me off! I don't have kids but wish I did, I'm the one that takes my friends littleones out so they can see what quads/dirtbikes are all about. I love teaching them about how to ride. I never ride without all my gear (except chest protector, and that's worn 95%) just to show them it is cool to ride with gear. These parents are the ones to blame, where were they? Any kid under 16 should be supervised and should not have access to a atv if the parents are not around! I have done some stupid shit when I was young (and still do) but I always wear my gear and I know my limits, sometimes I push them a little but I've been riding since I was 5 ( I'm 31 now). Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I had a cousin (11 years of age) that had a wreck on the street (concrete). She cracked her skull open (3 inch fracture). she's ok now. What happened was here brother (13 years old) was driving and turned around. her foot cought the tire and jerked her off about 15-20mph.

the same day her parents put the wheeler up for sale for like $500 to get rid of it.

They claim that is the punishment for being stupid for no helments, doubles, and street.

This could have killed her but it didn't (thank god).

Everybody pays the price for what they do.

she was 14 years old. she knew what she was doing.

ive had lots of motorcycle accidents, only two minor quad accidents, now ive allways worn minimum helmet, jacket(with integral armour pads or when offroad then full armour,),gloves an boots,(went down the side of a car(driftin on my old duke in italy!)and was only my boots that saved my leg and foot, and my handguard stopped me crushin my hand, helmets have saved me bone a couple a times, when i was young sometimes we never wore gloves or boots but when we were fckin around chasin chickins, and we fell off, sometimes it hurt more than it should of. anybody who hurts or kills themself without takin reasonable precautions has only got themself to blame and there statistic of "deaths by quads "should not be included.shame someone dies but, lifes hard and then u die. i consider with quads that reasonable protection means:- helmet, body armour or bike jackett, gloves, long leg pants,no shorts(i know how nice to ride with t an shorts is but if u play with fire expect to get burned),boots, handguards, nerf bars(i say this cos i went sideways into tree, not too fast but they saved my body from a full impact if never had em it would of been a lot worse. hope someone can learn from this without waiting to learn the hard way ;)

efward, I hope the hell you are joking! If not, stay off our site! Most people in atv'ing are good people that like to get together with friends and family and have a good time. That is what it's all about! The few that don't know what they are doing and don't ride responsibly that doesn't wear helmets don't represent the other 99% of us! Land closers are our worst enemy but most offroaders are land lovers and want to save forests and dune areas but still want to enjoy them. How fun is it to walk through 50mi of forest or 100mi of dunes? I would rather ride and take in the scenery while having fun with friends. Sorry all, that was my soapbox again!

Yes.

The sarcasm must have been laid too thinly for your taste, but yes it was a joke.

These kinds of stories and their fallout are exactly the amunition child safety activists and overexuberant politicians use to enact legislation which: closes riding areas and restricts atv production and sales. Making it more difficult, more dangerous and more expensive to pursue this pastime.

I guarnatee at this very moment there is at least one mothers group right now clamoring to "save the children" citing that news story as their rallying point.
