Stripped Peg Bolt

Recommended Posts

My left rear peg bolt is stripped.......should i .....A: drill it out and retapp the thread and just wait for the shitty soft rusty frame to give way again or....B: get a peice of "all thread" and weld it in then instead of having a bolt go into the frame have 3/4 inches of thread stick out of the frame? install the peg and use a nut instead of a bolt that screws into the frame.........or run a peice of all thread through the entire frame and do both sides at once.........every time i have removed my peg bolts i have pumped bearing grease into the chassis and smeared the bolts threads and they still rust........its a shame our frames fill with moisture..........

i have all thread with both forward and aft pegs, the aft gave out first then the fwd started going. I ran 7/16 and had to drill the holes with 1/2 inch drill. If you are going to run the all thread I recomend putting 2 nuts inside of the frame on the all thread to keep it from turning when you are trying to tighten because it will want to rotate.

Go to Consumer Auto Parts and get heli coils, I had to replace the threads on both pegs. You can get the kit for like $40 and it comes with the installation tool and 10 coils. Its definately worth the money to have the kit around the shop. Its really easy to use and it keeps the stock appearance. You just drill out the thread in the frame with whatever size bit the kit tells you (i'll go into my garage tomorrow and check). You then the use the tap that comes with the kit and tap the hole you drilled. Then you take the tool and insert the heli coil then back out the tool. Now you can just screw in the old bolt (if it not damaged) and you now keep the stock bolt size. It has held up really well so far and it torques down nicely.

i have done them all. retapped and it just got fucked up again. then i cut the whole deal out and put a piece of 1 inch stock steel tapped out in there. well that stripped too. this last time i got as piece of 3/8 inch all threadand ran through the whole deal. this is the best so far. and who cares if it bends or strips, i can just go get another piece. i think its because you stand on those pegs and it has to mess the threads up. i recommend one piece of all thread all the way through. just bolt one side up, then run thru. then you can just cut off however much you want. just be sure that you can get the nut back on after you cut it. i just left a nut on, then cut, then screwed it off. that way you can clean up the threads.

i was thinking of running the all thread through the whole frame to the otherside peg for the rear mount or welding it in so it wont spin........how did you get a bolt inside it?

I run all thread on both the fwd and aft holes. I would just run the all thread and get it over with, I tried welding, tapping the hole and nothing stood up to the abuse; well except the all thread

DO NOT use all-thread that is available at your local hardware store or Home Depot. The is usually Grade 1 crap! It is less than half as strong as the original mounting hardware. It will eventually break on you. If you don't have access to a welder, then I agree with mcaf29, use a heli-coil.
