New Chain Time.

My chain is starting to wear out.

So i visited the local chain dealer store,

and asked him for a 520 chain.

Next thing i now, He dives under his desk and comes up with a book about chains.

Do i want with o rings or x rings or no rings,

Different 520 chains for all kind of HP rateings.

He can order me 13 types of 520 chains based on the 104 links directly.

So i was kind of hmm OKI ill be back after i do some research.

And here i am searching the hq for chain information.

Who can help me out,

I would like a strong chain,

and most of the dealer chains wear out fairly quick.

Thanks for any advice!

Why do you guys use O-ring chains ? Waste of money IMHO, the O or X rings are there to help with the lube'in of the chain right ?? Dont we all spray our chains down with some lube b4 and after every ride ? Do you need those O-rings in there just in case you have to ride your Banshee across the Mojave and you forgot to carry along your chain lube ? :P

I bot a $20 non O-ring for my Banshee 3 or 4 years ago, and im still using it today. Iv taken a one link out of it so far, and iv had to shorten it when I got my -2 swingarm. It was rated at 8000 tensil strength, just as high as those fancy LMNOP-ring chains that sell for $75.

I would like to own one of those Ti-moly Sidewider chains tho, just because they're 14,000 tensil :)

BTW im using Maxima's Chain Wax for lube.

OK AN EXPLINATION IS DUE. I RUN THE X RING BECAUSE BOMBING THROUGH THE DESERT YOU SOMETIMES CROSS WATER AND THE X RING CHAIN DOES HELP CONTAIN THE LUBE SO FOR MY CONDITIONS I THOUGHT IT TO BE A BETTER CHOICE. DAMN STRAIGHT ON THOSE SIDEWINDERS BUT $$$$ LATER

k,

The dealer said: best to use o rings for "on road."

If youre doing alot of off road best to pick a "no ringer"

I think i'll go with a no ring and just pick a descent strong one out of his book :)

keep the comments comming!

I did a search aswell on DID and found some gold collored chain. it should be the ultimate for cross.

Every once in a while the O/X-ring no O/X-ring debate pops up. My feelings are as follows.

The ringed chains keep lube in the rollers and pins and keep dirt out. I don't lube my chains before every ride because the lube attracts the dirt and sand that I try to keep out of my chain. I clean my chains when the build up of grime is enough to warrant me doing so. Non ringed chains need to be lubed before each use. The dirt that is attracted by this lube works its way into the chain making it wear much faster. If your non ringed chain is squeeking you know that your chain has dirt in the rollers and pins. Since this crap is in there it's accellerating the wearing out much faster.

If your chain has stretched out so much that you have to remove a link to get it back in spec YOUR CHAIN IS WORN OUT!!!! A chain should basically only "stretch" during it's first use from it pushing the grease out of the pins and rollers. The rest of the time spent adjusting your chain is to compensate for wear on your sprockets.

I don't understand why some people run a chain until it snaps causing cracked cases. Replacing a chain is part of regular maintenance just as adjusting the chain.

The only difference between an O ring and X ring is the shape of the ring. They both do the same purpose. One advantage of the X ring is supposed to be less drag. The amount of ring touching the side plates is lessened with the X ring due to it's profile ]0[ verses ]X[

Sidewinder- 14,000 Tensile strength what else is there to say.

I put the whole set up on my banshee like a 2 yrs ago and its still strong. I adjusted it twice. Once about 2 rides after it was new, and (somehow) my rear end was all out of whack causing the chain to run crooked and loose for I dont even know how long.

The banshee is gone but I still got my sidewinder set.

I bought another set for my YZ250F dirtbike and gave it hell. I mean riding 4 days a week for few hrs on sandy ass tracks with the 4 stroke. One time I was "burried" or something after a crash in a soft burm. I was doing a diggin the hole with the back tire number to try to get out. When I finally got out I couldnt find neutral. Come to find out I WAS in neutral but the chain was so packed with sand that the back tire wouldn't even roll. I just rode it out. After abusing it so long all I need now is a new front sprocket (teeth are bending just a little)

what kind of chain comes stock.

I don't know if it was a fluke, but I rode my shee for about 2 1/2 years and only remember adjusting it twice, never had more than 1 1/2 in of play either.

I rode about 30 hours on it as well.

and I hear of people adjusting chains after every or every other ride.

im with meat....i use a tsubaki oem chain, its light was 24 bucks, coasts way better than an o-ring chain....besides spraying shit on the outside of an o-ring chain doesnt do a lot of good, i used to soak my oring in 30 weight, then hang them up and wipe them dry, works great with any chain since spraying shit on the outside just attracks dirt soaking the chain gets the lube between the pins and links where you need it, then it appears to be dry but is well lubed, kinda like it was when you got it new
