I changed out my plugs today and before I change the jetting I want your opinion. When I pulled the plugs I was shocked because they look like it's running pretty rich. Granted, I've had about ten 7-hour rides in the summer/fall on these plugs so I figured they would look kinda shot but you be the judge. The temperature here has only dropped 30-40 degrees on average; I'm leaning toward leaving the jets I have in there for a while, but if you guys think I should go higher/lower let me know!!! Currently running 290 mains, mods include Toomey T5's and a K&N filter in the stock airbox, stock carbs, reeds, etc...Any advice/tips/hints are greatly appreciated!!!!!

Did you do a WOT pass with those before you pulled them or was it idling around for a while first. They look like you got a bit of oil residue build up on them. You gotta look at the flat circle part that is the top of the thread. It most represents the top of your piston in the combustion chamber.

If you get a picture at then angle of looking down at the top of it we'd be able to read it better. It does look rich though from that angle if you did them with a wot test.

Hey thanks for the reply...Ironically, I haven't run it in about 3-5 days before I pulled the plugs. Last time I did run it I had it wide open in 2nd (My cove isn't that big :( ) and then let it kinda idle for about the time it took to smoke a cigarette. I killed the engine and pulled the plug wires and the mofos broke in two. The wire was old as dirt and needed to be replaced anyhow, so there it sat for a few days until I could get the coil/wires/plugs. When I get home I'll try and get a good top pic...It didn't look bad, just appeared to have been a little too rich. Once I put the new plugs/coil in she ran like a scalded beast! Thanks again for the help! :)

I really think you had better install brand new plugs and then do the WOT 6th gear chop. I doubt you can determine anything at all with those old plugs. If i were you i would buy at least 2 sets of new plugs. Do the test and see what you got. If you are a chocolate brown I would think you are pretty close or good. If not then a lighter color will tell you that you are lean but I'm sure you know that. Main point just get some new plugs and try it.

I did change the plugs AND coil, it runs 100% better now...I think you may be right though, I'm probably gonna need to buy a few more sets of plugs and do a plug chop...My biggest concern is not to go up on jetting if I am running rich, but I'm not too sure how rich I'm running. Does that make sense? Thanks for the help!

Yes, I mean it makes perfect sense to me to need to know where your at. But my biggest concern is that you are running too lean. Not that you are and it doesn't sound like you are. But those plugs were old so maybe it is possible that it is all build up over time. Of course i wouldn't change any jetting until I did a nice clean test first.

when you get the new plugs in, go ride it for like 30-60 minutes if your gonna do a WOT run. Doesnt have to be all at once but put some time on the plugs to give them coloration. Then I would at least rev up through 1st, rev up through second, and then when you top out in 3rd, hit the kill switch and pull the clutch in.

Check your plugs. It should have a chocolatish color on the top part of the threads (flat part around the electrode). If its all completely black, your rich, if theres nothing on it/has a whitish color almost looks like the metal is lacking moisture looking, your lean.

What elevation and temp are you at? What pilots are you running? I see you have a 290 main. I'm at like 900 ft and my buddies woke up a little more when we put 300 mains and a 30 pilot in it. I'm running 320's with my LRD's, and 310 in the summer with a 30 pilot.

Thanks for the info . ! Honestly I'm not sure which pilots I'm running, I bought the carbs with the jets already in em...the jet kit was from a motion pro twist kit; I'm assuming the pilots are stock. My elevation is right at/around sea level and I've ran this setup for the entire summer/fall with no problems whatsoever. Just in preparation for the winter I went and bought a set of 300, 310, and 320 mains in case I needed them. I'll try and get a little time in on these plugs and get back with you ASAP; I wanna have it tuned pretty well for MLK day. THANKS AGAIN for the help, you guys are GREAT! :D

I have not even had the chance to install my T5's yet. But when I do i am going to try 340 mains first and 30 pilot, stock needles in the factory location and air screw 1.5 turns out. I ride at sea level. When i install pipes i will also put on my clamp on K&N's i have. I run 40:1 mix, pump gas and I use Red Line two stroke racing oil, synthetic. Engine is bone stock.

Funny you say that about your T5's..I've had mine since late November and just put em on the other night when I changed the plugs and coil. I already had DG pipes on it beforehand, just made a nice step up though :D 340 mains sound a little high to me, but hell what do I know, I'm the one asking the questions about which jets to use! How's the humidity out there? Reason I ask is because I'm sure that plays a role as well to figure up the "perfect" jetting. I would figure the density of the air would be a factor almost as much as the temp...correct me if I'm wrong though!! :)

Im out here in Northern California. It doesn't get all that humid out here but the air is nice and dense right now. 340 might be high but it's winter and i'm thinking with the clamp on K&N's I should try and 340's first and do the test. I think the lowest i will ever want to go is 320 mains and the highest 370's. 290's seems too low to me with T5's and that's why i thought maybe you should check if you were lean. But every situation is different.

Very true! I'm sure you'll get a lot more air flow with the clamp ons, much more than I get!! You'll have to let me know how your jetting turns out, will be interested to hear considering our mods are similar. I'm looking forward to getting some more plugs and doing a couple of chops, that will be the true answer I suppose...Didn't think about the fact of those plugs I had in there were so old, a lot of the darkness to the plugs probably came with age! I appreciate ya'lls help with this!!!

Sounds like you're on the right track bigboybanshee, you've got the mains if you need them and a plug chop will tell you where you're at on the mains...just thought I'd say it looks like you got it under control.
