i have an 03 shee with around 15 hours max on it and about 2 weeks ago i was riding and i heard some strange sounds so i stopped and it locked up, well come to find out the piston skirt broke up and locked it up. I took it in to my local dealership and they turned right around and told me it was my fault that the skirt broke because sand got into the motor and wore the cylinder out so bad that it starting slapping around, but i got to look at the damage and what was funny is the the piston had a little scaring on it but the cylinder looked clean, no visible scrapes, nothing at all to the naked eye anywayz...they said i didnt have oil on my air filter, which i did cause i had jus check it about a 4 days before that and i didnt even ride it till the day it broke and the filter was fine.....so was it my fault, or faulty piston??? lemme know

The dealership is trying to screw you. Are you the original owner? is it still under warranty? Yammy dealers are always trying to scam out of warranty work. I see it al the time, and hear about it. That is their favorite excuse when a skirt breaks. I wonder if they are told that one by Yamaha themselves? My buddys V-max sled broke a skirt, and they told him the exact same thing. Sand got in there and wore it down. Now, anyone that knows about sleds, how in the hell are you gonna get sand in the motor, let alone any debris. Sled motors have a well engineered airbox to keep water, and debris out. Yammy is wierd...

how long after you bought it did you bring it into the dealership? If it was within 3 months you should still put up a fight. If its not in the first 3 months....your basically shit out of luck.

If it is and they are making that claim that your filter isnt oiled and sand wore the cylinder down causing piston slap, go pick it all back up, and go get the cylinder mic'd by a machine shop. They're trying to screw you.

If its within 3 months go for it, if you bought the additional 3 months you've got 6 months warranty. If its after that. Figure about 225-250 to get going again. Do the work yourself, we'll help you. Its really easy. You dont even need a clymers manual or anything.

yep my did the exact same thing and ive had enough time with the dealers before with my blaster... and if they would fix it $$$$$ for them to open and clean the crank case.... just rip it open and make sure the crank is ok... then clean out the case and all debris, it should turn over smoothly then. After that bore your cylinders .020 over just to be safe. And new pistons and gaskets for everything and you should be riding again. My went like that but i had a nasty scar in the cylinder so i went .040 over. hoped this helped and good luck.
