Sorry to say it dude, but you now need a new top end.

You will need new pistons, rings and to bore or hone the cylinders, depends on how deep the gouges are in the cylinders.

You can sure tear it down yourself, but you will need a shop to bore/hone the cylinders.

If this has been done before, you need to find out how far over stock bore the bike has been taken.

So, you can at least start taking the carbs and reeds out. If you want, you can take the cylinders off, depends on how comfortable you are with doing this.

It is not hard, Clymers gives good instructions on how to do it.

Parts you will need to put it back together:

Pistons

Rings

Cylinder Base Gaskets

Reed Block Gaskets

Cool Head Orings

Check all of your hoses, this is a good time to replace.

This is a good start. Let me know if you decide to do it yourself, it is actually pretty easy and it is nice to know you did the work yourself.

Well, that is definitely bad news. :( I have found the same thing on one occassion before. You could have done one of two things. You could have either snapped a ring off the piston,. or it threw a rod bearing. There was debris in there and it was getting hammered by the piston. If you heard no knocking, and didn't mention any odd noise, so I am assuming that the bearing didn't let go. When my lower rod bearing went, it locked up the motor. 5th gear!!! Anyways, you have to rip the motor out. You MUST split the cases to clean everything out. If it was just a ring that came off, I am betting that it didn't get into the lower end. They usually don't. but, you can never be too safe. You will need to clean the crank thoroughly. And while your at it, get it welded. You will have to get it bored, and get a new top end kit. When you get the cylinder(s) off, give a couple tugs on the piston and rod assembly and check for up and down play, this would indicate that a bearing had failed. I would clean the motor off, and pull the whole thing out. It isn't tough. Split the cases, (also not too tough) and inspect everything. I tried to get by without splittign the cases when I blew a hole in a piston. Shortly thereafter, the crank threw a lower rod bearing due to some debris that had gotten down in there.....

Another (Dumb?) question...

When I pulled off the coolhead, I didn't see any head gasket...is this because the head gasket on a coolhead is the o-rings on the bottom side?

I will read my clymers, but was also wondering...when you split the cases(which is the bottom end right?), do you need to get more gaskets, etc?

Thanks,

T

Yes. When you split the cases, you will need some new gaskets. And you will also need new base gaskets, and some other misc. ones... The base gaskets, and some other ones, should come with your new top end kit. (pistons, rings, wrist pins, etc..) but what you will need to purchase seperately is a lower end gasket set. Crank seals, output shaft seal, shift shaft, kickstart shaft and what not. These should all be replaced..... And a tube of Yamabond from the local stealership.
