I'm Looking For Inexpensive Car Audio And Help.

I'm looking to put some sounds in my truck. I have an f150 supercrew...2001. So far I'm looking at an Alpine head unit with the 4v pre's. A 4ch for front and rear. A 2ch mono amp for 1 12".

I really really want a great front stage. I have been out of the scene for a while. So far I'm looking at the infinity Kappa's and the MB Quarts ( I think dsc 916). I've debated the kick panels for imaging but have heard from some with expeditions that it didn't help to much. I may just try to support good imaging by moving the tweeters as far forward on the dash as possible and leave the 6.5's in the doors.

I'm be putting some simple 6x8's in the rear doors so it doesn't pull my front stage away to much. The 12 will fit in a custom box under the rear seat.

Any help with creating a crystal clear front stage would be appreciated. Also, if you have an inexpensive place to purchase these items... that of course would be good too.

Here is a link to the most inexpensive place I have found Etronics web site

I am a big fan of Polk audio speakers. For clean mids and tweets. I am not sure if they are still around, but A/D/S used to have the BEST high end speakers IMHO. I have never heard anything better. I absolutely hate MB Quartz anything. It provides a fake sound to the music that I don't like. Too "tinny" for me. I have never heard a MB Quart speaker sound good, no matter what size it is. Keep in mind that imaging will diminish the farther you seperate the tweets from the driver. you want the music to come from the windshield. I have toyed with mounting tweets on the backside of the mirror, and delaying them a touch, and using the reflective properties of the glass to my advantage. That requires a tuneable imaging device, and I doubt you will get into that. In my Beretta comp vehicle, (6" drop, lots of other good stuff) I had door pods I made that housed 2 6" drivers, 1 tweet per door, and in the kicks I had 4x6 plates, and in the dash, I had 4T 2-ways. Talk about a front stage. That car required ear plugs. It was too loud. You could hear lyrics with the windows open from 2 blocks away. 3/0 welding cable for power wire. :o It was a nice rig!!! Anyways, I like a good front stage and that is where your focus should be. Get a good component set. Don't go with too many speakers if you can't time them. You run the risk of getting a possible echo in the truck. However, different speakers provide their own kind of sound. it depends what you like, and what you listen too. I highly recommend either Polk or A/D/S if they are still around. For amplifiers, it depends where you go and what you want to spend. Get a really good amplifier for your drivers and tweets. Subwoofer amp isn't as important. Good cabling is a wise investment. I haven;'t been in this for a little bit. PPI amps are a good clean amp. you can setup a good system for a good price if you shop around and ask questions.

Boonman, I have put tweets in the mirrors before. As far I was concerened, they blended to much. I didn't have a way to time them though. I used a dremel and spiral cutting bit and they fit nice.

I haven't been in this game for a while keep in mind. I have read what you are saying about mb quarts. It supposedly the titanium tweeter. I don't know. I am going to try to make my rounds listening to some more speakers today. They ALWAYS sound different on the wall of the store though.

I will take the polk advice. I listened to some yesterday and they had a very smooth sound to them.

When I was in it last, the ppi amps were the shit. I had a little 30x30 running two 10" kenwoods one time (probably the smallest I ever had back then :D ) and it actually pushed them hard. I was amazed.

Anyway, all the advice I can get would be appreciated. I want something very clear.

Thanks

I think you're off to a good start when it comes to components...Polk's really do have a smooth sound and are usually sold at a reasonable price. I myself am a fan of MB QUARTS. I love the crisp sound they deliver when pushed with a solid amp. PPI amps WERE the shit back in the day but unfortunately I don't think they are manufactured any more. However, I did see a few of the A600 art series PPI amps on ebay the other week going for a couple 100, used of course. As far as imaging goes I've always had good luck putting the tweets in the dash as close to the windshield as possible, facing directly upward. I've run that setup in a couple cars and it sounded as if the high's were comin straight at you..IMO it sounded DAMN good and once I can afford another set of QUARTS that's how I'm gonna run em in mine...6.5's in the door with pair of tweets in the dash. Good Luck!! :)

Opposite opinions lmao. I guess that's what I get for asking. I wish I knew more people that were into this stuff around here... so I could listen to them myself.

What is your guys opinion on the kicks as far as imaging. I have read about them, but I want real world advice through real world experience.

Thanks

Just the harsh sound they put out. Don't get me wrong, they are clear sounding, but it's just not soft enough. Harsh is the only word that comes to mind to explain them. And they cost an outrageous amount of $$$ for what you get. I know they win comps alot, but alot of people use them too. They give the microphone the sound it wants to hear. but my ears tell me a different story. I have been in ALOT of vehicles. I can tell you from personal experience that a car that RTA's excellent, most likely sounds like dogshit to me. I have been to quite a few IASCA shows, and I just haven't heard an MB equipped vehicle that I enjoyed listening too. Alright, maybe one or two, but they are extreme exceptions. Just not a fan of them...

definately go with silk tweets and component fronts...going to the kickpannels should help some, but you said inexpensive, I'd put the extra money into the deck or amps.

polk's are good but kappas are more budget probably.

For the Sub I would go with a W3, if you just want good clean sounding bass with a little punch to it too.

I can't stand aluminum or titanium tweets, they have a horrible tinging sound after a while. And sloppy bass is just as annoying over time.

I prefer seperate amps for the fronts and woofers.

I can see your point boonman, they do have a kinda harsh sound;liking QUARTS is almost like gaining an aquired taste for beer I guess...The infinity kappa's do have a smooth sound, my brother had a set of separates that I loved...You guys are right though about the silk tweets, much softer than the titanium. For me, the silk tweets are just too soft...I guess I've lost too much of my hearing over the years so I almost need the titanium tweets to hear that really high frequency...Sad but true...I would definitely suggest running two amps, much easier to tune a system like that. If you're looking for the most bang for the buck I would definitely go with a Polk sub. I don't think you'll be able to find a better priced sub that could deliver the same quality for the price you'd pay. I had a friend who got that same deal boonman was talking about before (buy one get one) and I was truly amazed at what those things could do...

If you want a real nice front stage look at Image Dynamics they have Horn Loaded Compression Drivers (HLCD's) component set. It can either use a 5.25 or 6.5 midbass and uses a horn instead of a little tweeter. I have the CD1MH set and power with a Usamps amplifier. I have had component sets in the past and this set up is far superior. I would also recommend a single IDMAX 12" to provide the low end. These items are not cheap put provied excellent sound.
