Baileycakes
Can I change the seal (#7) without removing the whole shift shaft assembly? I read the clymers and it looks fairly easy to remove the whole assembly, but i was wondering of i can just change (the shifter side) seal by pulling it out without taking the clutch out of the other side...? Thanks all
ZillaFreak
If you can pull the seal with the shaft still in, then do it. Best of luck removing the seal with the shaft still in and clearing it though.
JUSTWANNARACE
Use a small diameter screw (like a sheetrock screw) and screw into seal on each side of shaft them just grab the screws and pull the seal out. Or you can use some small hook picks if you have them, to pull it
kawa110
^^^ive done the screw trick many times...use a coarse screw...don’t scratch the shift shaft though
WALZ
Maybe do seal behind sprocket too while your perfecting the coarse screw removal skills. I use a deep socket to install the shift seal, larger regular socket works for the seal behind sprocket.
sleeper06
You can usually get em started or all the way in with your finger, I have a Lil brass punch I rounded out for tapping those seals in

I dont want to rig it or cause damage because i took a shortcut.. In your opinion, should i just remove the whole shift shaft??
ZillaFreak
You can remove it with the shaft in. I just find it easier to take the shaft out, then remove the seal. Then you can check the shaft for any damage (scoring or bent). Then you can clean out the casing where the seal goes. You can try to clean it out with the shaft in, maybe you can visual check for scoring, but I just rather take the time to take it apart.
