Question to ask township to hold an event at abandoned dirt runway

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to know what all goes into running a drag race event. What experience does anyone have in attending and or running an event like this. Are there usually entry fees paid by racers and spectators ECT. There are three local atv clubs that I was going to approach to see if any of there members would be interested.

I know insurance waivers and event use waiver will be the first question the township will have.

Its kind of frustrating to see tax dollars goes to waste, as every few years the township goes in and cuts back all the overgrowth and grates the runway surface. Then let it sit unused till the next time. 036c3c2ca6e165f40c3065d1a4964029.jpg

Money. It is all about money. To set up a dirt drag, you need money for the land. Money for structures. Money for equipment. Money for personal.

Yes I understand that. Township land here if unused is available for event use, just have to submit an application. Would be a day or weekend thing only so structures would not be required. Event Would be more aimed at a charity type or to go towards trail maintainance and and cash prizes for winners ECT.

If doing just a simple one time thing.

You need a christmas tree. Some cones to line the lane.
Just don't expect any serious drag quads to show up to something that really isn't set up for it.

I wouldn't expect that, as drags are not a big thing here yet. Club I belong to, I was the only 2 stroke sport quad rider (250r) for 7 years out of 230 members. Now though were are up to 28 2 stroke riders ranging from 250r, quadzilla, and banshees.
Equipment seems pretty simple, man power and legal waiver are my main first concern.

Charge an entry fee (gate fee) of like $10 to anyone who shows up (spectators and riders both) use this money however you want.

Charge racers an additional $10 per class to race.

Set up classes for 4stroke stock and mod

2stroke stock and mod

Peewee class for the kids

An open class that any atv can enter

Maybe some motorcycle classes

Run any class you feel ppl will want.

All money paid to race in each class is what the payout for that class will be. If you have 2 ppl enter? Winner gets $20

If you have 20 ppl enter, you have $200 and can pay out to the top 2-3 places.

Yes that was the kind of breakdown a races I was thinking maybe mud run to big in this area.
As for insurance I totally agree and since it Canada would prob be my first 1.6 child born.
I have sent out a few email to the surrounding clubs, and that their concern was insurance as well. But they are putting me contact with their insurance broker to see what it would take.
Just in the pre-plan stage. Might also approach the local fair as they have demo derbies and car shows ECT.
That said I'm still open to suggestions.

Good luck!

Odds are your insurance will not cover this type of event, you then need to find out if the township's insurance can even cover that type of event.  ATV's are a liability... drag racing ontop of that.  their tightwads most of the time about stuff like this.

10$ per person is going to be too cheapfor a one time event.. your going to be out of your pocket large $$$$   maybe 10$ for spectators but its going to be considerably more for racers IMO.

Where abouts are you located again? I know a few people that hold yearly events however its on personal property which is a huge game changer vs township property.

You will def have to push "fund raiser" in their mouth too... and they will prob charge you to regroom the track ect... IF they even approved of it.  makes me think of an old airplane run way in barrys bay, place is shut town but yet you cant ride there.

Run ways are like golf courses, its a natural calling. Lol.
Located near Peterborough Ont.
I know its a long shot but would be nice to see some type of use out of it

Cool... Only a couple hours from me then.... if it happens let me know would be worth the tour out not to mention I know quite a few people I could drag into that scene from around here but yea...  like what was mentioned countless times.. insurance is the biggie and a huge chance the towhship is going to somewhat laugh and say no

Yea you are probably right. But won't hurt to try. Where are you located east Ottawa area?

For sure never hurts to try!  worst case they say no... no real loss other then a bit of time

Good to know. Ottawa is one of the cities I may end up in for a bit, hospital crap. Wonder if I can park the bike at the hospital parking garage for when I'm board lol.

Yes QC is awesome have ridden there twice but on snowmobile, will be trying it on the quad next year.
Have you heard if the Ganeraska forest. Its local to me 5000 hectares of trails, sand pits ECT. Pretty a sweet place and OPP petrol it on some big stuff so are pretty slow, but are cool as long as you have all your docs ECT and not driving like an idiot.

Your lucky to have as many sport quad riders over there as you do to have a club, even a few 2 strokes too very cool!

We sometimes are allowed to attend 4x4 mud drag races. After the track is almost back to wet dirt, some banshees and snowmobile glide right accross with the right setup.  Other than that its redo type atv stuff.

Sometimes I feel to be the only active 2 stoke quad rider around, its super limited numbers of people over this way that even ride any kind of race quad. And most that are into q zillas, 250r are a bit older and tend keep to themselves.

Its all about single track crazy hill climbs over here, where a mx dirtbike is almost needed.

We are lucky to have a good membership and seems to be growing along with surrounding clubs with the lack of snow as of recent.
All of the surrounding townships now allow atv use on public roads to allow to connect to different trail heads.
Considering I fall in that gap of older guys, the 2 stroke is my go, lol and other member who ride them are as old or older.
Are you located with ontario sounds like some interesting riding.
