421alkybanshee Posted May 2, 2017 Report Posted May 2, 2017 Hi all, I've been racing asphalt and getting ready to go to sand/dirt. Currently running 17/ 40 sprockets. I'm running a 421 cub with 24 tall tire. What gearing will be optimal? Paddles are SLS staggered 14 paddle. I was wondering if 14/46 is where I should be? Thx in advance Quote
J-Madd Posted May 3, 2017 Report Posted May 3, 2017 There are a few variables there. Are you racing 300 ft? Sent from my STV100-1 using Tapatalk Quote
J-Madd Posted May 3, 2017 Report Posted May 3, 2017 And no 14/46 is not it. Sent from my STV100-1 using Tapatalk Quote
J-Madd Posted May 3, 2017 Report Posted May 3, 2017 Yes, 300 ft.You should start at 14/43 with that tire. Assuming average weight. Tune from there. Sent from my STV100-1 using Tapatalk Quote
justin_smallwood Posted May 3, 2017 Report Posted May 3, 2017 Yeah that is a tall tire...I run 14/41 with a 20inch. And it's pretty good. I'll do what J-madd said Quote

I'll do what J-madd said The great thing about changing from a 22" tire to a 24" is that it is about a 1 tooth difference in the front sprocket to keep the same final ratio. So if you like to try different tires but you are happy with your gearing, just change the front sprocket 1 tooth. No need to change the rear. Also there's a better chance your chain will accept both gearing setups. EDIT: I see you run 20" tire, but my statement still stands true for those that have 22" and 24".
