death_merchant
I just recently sold my old '87 LT500R Quadracer and picked up a stock '03 Banshee. I got it from the local repo man with almost no hours on the quad. I have no idea what kind of break-in period this Banshee received, so I took it easy on her for the first tank of gas or so. Since then I've been riding her pretty hard (drag racing my friends, cross-country, and racing around some farm ground). Each time that I take the Banshee out she develops a hot idle problem. After about ten minutes she refuses to idle down when the clutch lever is pulled in. She also backfires occassionally. I'm a 240 pound, fairly aggressive rider. The Banshee is stock as a rock. No mods whatsoever (yet). I run Mobil 1 MX2T synthetic two-stroke oil at 32:1 with 94 octane premium gas. The Banshee seems to have good compression (as felt through the kickstarter), but I've spent most of my time on a Quadzilla, so it's hard for me to judge what is normal for a Banshee. There was a problem when I first brought the Banshee home...the previous owner had overfilled the coolant system. The first time she refused to idle, I did a quick check of the engine and saw antifreeze dripping off the frame. The engine hadn't overheated, but the system was so full that when the engine warmed up, the coolant expanded and leaked out at the radiator cap. Any ideas about what may be causing my hot idle problem???
NYUK
check and make sure the carb slides are dropping all the way down ,when off the gas. sounds like it s running lean to be heating up like that and back firing.sync the carbs and go up on the main jet. fatten up the needle a clip position. banshee tuner
Before you rejet i would spray carb cleaner around the intakes with the engine running and see if it revs up. If it revs up you have an air leak and you need to check your gaskets. Just trying to save you some time looking for the problem.
death_merchant
I forgot to mention in my original post that I have checked for air leaks around the engine. I used a can of ether and sprayed all around the carb boots, balance pipe, intakes, head and base gaskets, and crank seals. The engine continued to purr without picking up any rpm's whatsoever. So there shouldn't be any air leaks. Is there such a thing as an internal leak of coolant into the combustion chamber(s)? The coolant system was overfull and therefore overpressurized... lfmer20
man i have a bone stock 02 and it does the same thing. once the engine is hot, it will idle high for a while then slowly lower. same prob. with the backfiring. i posted questions about it this past summer but couldn't figure the problem out. i am thinking my carbs are just out of sync.
