Larger carbs for mostly stock motor?

It would be minimal.

It'd be more of a placebo if you can get the carbs tuned in.

But on a stock port motor, you'd have a hard time getting them tuned perfect.

You'd lose bottom end i bet

And if I port it? I can't stand riding a bike that's all top end especially on trails like I ride. I NEED that low end grunt almost all the time

Something needs to change in my setup though because right now my bike dogs a little down low, not as much as it did, but there's still a HUGE power-band that hits and suddenly I'm looking at the clouds in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear

Alright, just trying to gather some more opinions before I make my decision. It seems that some people can put 35s on a stock motor and gain a lot of power, and some people say you'll lose power. And then there's the few people who say go with a large single carb. Guy at my work, steven, is like a master engine tuner. He told me about the 03 banshee he had a few years ago, with vforce reeds, a big single carb, and toomey pipes, that would run with and sometimes beat the 392-465cc guys unless their quads were tuned perfectly. Everyone seems to have different experiences with these things and everyone's way is the best

Lotta has been folks out there. I'm saying his claim is doubtful or fellas on bigger bikes weren't riding well.

Stockers are good and if you're not ported it's nonsense to swap carbs. If you can't make the stock carbs run clean, what makes you think a new carb you have no experience with at all will fix your issue? They all need to be dialed in regardless of size and brand. Believe it or not, a 2/1 requires a better tuner then if you had the stock dual carbs. They get finicky on the midrange to top end transition and takes a perfect needle and position, otherwise they just feel goofy. Your decisions and money, but I reccomend learning the stickers before spending money. Maybe, just maybe, if you had all the bolt ons, I'd do a set of 28mm PWK's but that's after everything you could do before porting. Now once a motor is ported, not just material moved here and there by someone who thinks they know porting, but an actual two stroke specialist, you have a whole different animal.

Your friend Steven is a master bater. His pipes and single carb engine isn't keeping up with shit.

I'm not saying I'm taking his or anybody else's word as gospel, I'm just trying to find a setup that works for me WITHOUT spending a load of money on trial and error. He is an extremely good engine tuner however I know that from experience, but I don't want to go single carb anyway.

 

if you are running a stock head go with a aftermarket head and newer dome design and maybe a bit more compression. you want torque? save your pennies and build a 472 serval cub.

 

I honestly don't understand the aftermarket heads with different cc domes and all that. And that's one of those mods where EVERYONE seems to have something to say about it and they all make the best power with their head. As far as the 472 goes, I have been considering that actually, but I found a 521 for basically the same price, just doesn't have pipes included. If I can save that much money over the winter here, then I'll probably do that in the beginning of spring a long with the other mods I want.

I wasn't assuming they would resolve my issue immediately, I had no clue if they would, that's why I asked questions. How much does porting generally cost and do you recommend anybody in particular? Like I said I've got nothing for local I basically live in the middle of nowhere lol

Porting is gonna be 3-400ish. There is a laundry list of engine builders who are doing great stuff with these machines. Hit the sponsor list and start making calls to see who you feel is on the same page as far as budget and goals are concerned.

 

Ive sent stuff and bought stuff from multiple guys on the sponsor list. Fast, Redline, LED, etc. all great fellas.

i wouldnt go any larger then a 28mm carb until you have a massive motor.

 

if you put bigger carbs on a stock setup,  you will loose more bottom end.

 

Have a good person, most likely a site sponsor do your port work,  turn the timing up to 4 degrees.  your pipes will be decent for the trails.

 

your big power band issue is most likely jetting/tuning.
