SANDSTAR
I run a Pioneer cd head unit in my T.J. It kept playing after I layed my Jeep on it's side. I have had an Alpine head unit in another vehicle, but due to the AZ heat, it kept blowing up. It wouldn't blow fuses, it would just start smoking. I went through 2 of them. But it may be due to the autio express that installed them. As far as anythin else other than head units, look into Rockford Fosgate. Their amps and subs are designed and made in Tempe, AZ. They can withstand all kinds of rough treatment and alot of heat.

bigboybanshee
IMHO JL audio ain't worth a piss.... I'm with boonman on that one...they are extremely overpriced for what you get...not saying they're horrible speakers or anything(they do sound good) but you could buy a number of different speakers/subs for a lesser price and gain the same sound as you would with a JL. IMHO it all has to do with who's installing the system, building the enclosure(s), etc...I can build a box to make damn near anything sound good; given I have adequate power and wattage. I run a pioneer in-dash CD player (absolutely LOVE IT), Pioneer 700W amp pushin' two Kicker CompVR 12's (I prefer Phoenix Gold amps but way too much $$$$$), Boston acoustics separates in the doors with a Prestige 200W amp running to them...It sounds really clean, I get nothing but compliments about it...If I could afford it I would run a set of Fosgate Punch DVC 12's with a solid 1000W of Phoenix Gold power.. ..Anyhow, my brands of choice that I suggest to my friends are Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion for head units...Phoenix Gold, MTX, Audio Art, U.S. Amps, Hi-Fonics for amplifiers. MB QUART, boston acoustics, pioneer for component speakers. Kicker, Fosgate (DVC only), Pioneer for subs just to name a few...There are other brands that are great, it just depends on your music taste and how you like to listen to it....If you lived close I'd cut anyone who needs help with their system a hell of a deal, building boxes, install, suggestions, etc... DeuceRooster
I've been out of car audio for about two years but I always used either Sony ES series decks or Eclipse both are excellent.

brock_fuzzy_69
dont let anybody bullshit you man all alpine equipment is designed and manufactured in the JVC plant so i say save your money and buy anythign but alpine the JVC unit is typically 40 percent less money than alpine and its the same stuff
bigboybanshee
I've had 3 JVC head units and all of them crapped out on me within 6 months...cheaply made in my opinion...
Justintoxicated
I can't beleive this, even my old JL W0's out pound so many of the newer subs n crap these other companes make. They have been run overpowered for so long now and have never blown. I got 2 12's in a box for $240 and this was something like 6 or 7 years ago; thats a VERY reasonable price. Your goign to have to pay more $$ to squeez large amounts of bass out of small tight enclosures. The clarity of the sound in there newer subs in combination with durability is hard to touch. My friend bought 2 sony ES subs 2 years after I purchased mine payed over 2x as much and they were sloppy as hell and could not reach near the same levels of sound. Another friend also like the sonys but quickly blew them up. Sometimes you get what ya pay for, my sterio system has lasted a very long time now though so for 240 they were worth every penny I spent. The quality of there stuff the way there new subs mount, and the clarity of the bass are what make them so expensive. Many other brands of speakers just don't hold up over the years, and for a similar priced fosgate I belive JL will blow them out of the water in terms of clarity, percision and durability. If anyone thinks their $240 subs can out crank my 6-7 year old subs then bring it on! I don't care how new they are. Again the older alpines were great quality, so i guess its JVC that builds them now, probably junk then...I like quality of the eclipshe stuff but IMO detachable face is a must. I don't care if the sterio won't work in someone elses car after its been ripped off, and your windows have been smashed in. Your still going to have to replace yours! So far my Hifonics amp has been great, but then again its only driving 260 watts of subs.
bigboybanshee
I wish I could come and have a little competition w/ya Justintoxicated...not trying to degrade your system at all, just think I'd hit harder/it's all in fun anyhow ...I got my subs for a $100 a piece and built the box myself (box costs $20 in material) almost 5 years old and still feel and look brand new. My buddy had some 12 W0's and they sounded clean/accurate but didn't put out much SPL. I had 3 JL 10 W0's once and sold them 3 months later, just not enough bass for my liking. Like I had said in my previous post, it all depends on what your music taste is and how loud you listen to it...I had an associate of mine brag about how hard his stereo was "bangin"; went to listen to it and it was so distorted it about made me puke. I tell you what, if I could afford 1 pair of Fosgate DVC 12's and an amp to push em, I'd put them up against any pair of 12's, single 15, 3 10's, whatever...I had a buddy of mine that had four of them in his MX3 hitting in the upper 160's SPL...had another friend in high school with SIX JL W6's (at $300 a piece) that could only pull out at best a 155 SPL...Keep in mind that SPL is almost like horsepower, after a certain amount you have to almost double the power to gain DB/horsepower, whichever applies. Shit, if you're ever in Memfrica hit me up, I doubt I'll be travelling anywhere for quite some time!!
boonman
Overpowering a speaker means nothing. If you feed a speaker crap, you will get crap. Overpowering a speaker doesn't blow it. Distortion does. And feeding a speaker sounds that it can't optimally reproduce. (ie. distortion) Anyways, I was in Circuit city one day, stopping in for a Cd player for the home rack system. I happened to stroll through the car audio department. I was in need of a new in dash anyways, (oddly enough it was an Alpine that blew. ) I stumbled upon a deal they had going. (This was last Christmas). it consisted of an MTX enclosure, and 2 12" Profile, yes, Profile subs. I have been running Earthquake subs for years, and I just couldn't afford another system. But my winter ride was in need of some sound. Anyways, this deal had the subs, a profile amp, and the box for $195. I also stumbled upon a deal on Polk audio speakers, (I LOVE POLK!!! ) for buy one pair geet a pair half off. I got new speakers in the dash and rear doors of the S-10, and I got that box, amp and speakers. I have been pounding the shit out of them since then. They look like the cheapest piece of garbage on the planet. But you know what, they have excellent SQ, and a sweet SPL pump. $ for $, I don't think I could have touched what is in there now. It is now the wifes rig, and it was stuff I didn't really care about. I actually expected to blow the shit up. But didn't. I have personally witnessed people pull into a DB drag, and smoke several JL's at once. Not overpowered. not feeding them garbage signals. Professionally set up systems. The first and last time I used JL's, they sounded like garbage. Tried making a few different enclosures. My strokers had better SQ than the W-4's I had. I would not take even a set of JL's best speaker out in trade for my wife's Profile subs. Never. Just MHO. I hate JL. Reliability IMHO is zilch. After thorough testing of these profiles, I would say they are better than Anything JL has out.
WickedBanshee
i agree 100% w/ justin on the jl sub issue. so many people have come to me and my brother and our friend thinking they got "the shit and then some" system cause they got a huge ass amp (1000 watts out of jc witney just dont cut it) and a pair of badass subs. then we show them the good ol jl wo 15's in the explorer w/ a measley little kicker amp (they could handle twice the power) and it blows them away and needless to say makes them feel really really stupid. these subs cost my bro like 150 apiece and pound to beat hell. my other friend had some jl 10's and gave them at least twice the amount of power they were supposed to have and they just took it and begged for more. i will never stray from jl. .
Boonman said: My strokers had better SQ than the W-4's I had. Well no kidding. They were w-4's. Thats like comparing blasters to banshees in the JL lineup. On another note. There's 2 types of subs. Ones that pound, and ones that create quality sound. And they both interlay into each other. The W6's that I have were built for mainly quality sound, with the ability to still produce a decent DB level. Theres subs out there that create better sound, but dont hit as hard, and subs that hit harder, but dont sound as good. JL kinda put themselves on another level with the introduction of their w6 that it was giving off both qualities with a higher db without hurting sound quality. And it all starts with a powerful output head unit, going to an amplifier that will bring out the qualities of the sub. And I gotta admit, The digital synchronizer I got is one of the best things I've ever gotten for a stereo system. It completely changes the way the bass is. It incorporates it into the rest of the music and just feels like its more around you then coming at you. And then you can hang the microphone on the rearview mirror and set a soundstage thats in front of you (you can save 4 different points of where the microphone is) Or in a db contest you can have all your sound hitting the db reader at the same time (component speakers add db as well)
