clutch basket/starter gear bushing

Recommended Posts

I know about the needle bearing conversion some use but i was wondering if anyone wants to share a part number for a replacement bushing. I saw redline sells a gear and bushing. I have a good gear just looking for the bronze, steel bushing.

I haven't seen how the bearing setup is configured on these engines but I know nearly every other 2stroke ever made uses a double row needle on a steel bushing and they seem to last forever. 500 hrs would be nothing under normal use for most engines. the basket turns relatively slow so its not likely to wear out anytime soon from to many revolutions. a few seasons of clutch dumps on asphalt may wear it out quicker than normal I guess. im not a asphaly guy so I couldn't say for sure. what type of failures are you talking about ? was it a high quality bearing used ? I wont say what brand but some of them pancake setups are sent out with the cheapest Chinese bearing you can imagine. how they last longer than a weekend is beyond me. luckily theres a heavy duty upgrade from a Honda engine that can be used. I could see a cheap bearing under the basket failing in short order

the ones i have seen available are not the same as other dirtbike/ atv style.  they are the bearing shoved on the end of kicker gear..   i have a setup i did that uses 2 bushings and the bearing  but it lets the bearing actually rotate like it should.  involved machining the gears down some

Redline is the only one having the bushings made in quantity, he was running extremely low last time I checked and I had to get a set of straight cuts without it. . It's probably cheaper to get a used basket n press bushing out . I have a sacrificial bushing I use as a press tool so I don't damage good bushings on the press

Back when I worked in a transmission shop, I ordered some needle bearings to go in there. They are far superior to the junker in the bronze race that you see on EBay. Pretty sure they were out of the Toyota U series transmissions. None the less, it's a pretty stout part and it's been put in the same motor after 2-3 rebuilds.

I know the redline one will work and last. My issue is the cost. I have a good gear, just looking for a bushing. A few years ago tedder was selling them for 23bucks. I am in no rush and have found that if i take my time and figure out where else the same parts are used i can buy at a significant discount. (Lectron parts come to mind)
