BansheeRider576
I have quite a few questions about porting so if you could answer any of the following that would be great thanx... 1.) Do you have to have stage 1 porting done before stage 2 or 3? 2.) What stage porting is best for a trail/mx/dune rider who plans to add a 4mm stroker along with the porting? 3.) Who does good porting at a reasonable price? 4.) How good is the porting done bya guy from Hy -tech performance they auction of porting jobs on ebay at very reasonable prices? Do you think i would be taking a risk having done by this guy on ebay or not? Responses to any of the previous questions would be great thanx alot.. Lanky
I herd nothing but good things about Patriot Racing
skykingcory
1. No 2. That would be determined by the builder and how much power you are looking for. 3. Patriot Racing did my trail port and it was very reasonable on the pricing. He did an awesome job and the bike hauls ass and is much more rideable than before. There were quite a few people that were surprised at the power I was making with stock carbs and stock reed cages. 4. I personally wouldn't trust ebay that much for porting. You need to contact the builder and ask him questions before just buying the porting. Also do you want to do all that work of taking it apart and having a crappy job done??? I didn't so I chose a reputable builder. Dan at Patriot Racing also welded my crank and redomed my stock head while he was porting my cylinders. No regrets what so ever. Just have to be somewhat patient with him since he is very busy and does a lot of work. This is a sign that he is a good builder as most of them stay very busy porting. There are other great porters out there. Just wanted to give you my opinion on what experiences I've had.

thebloker
1) First off, pick which port job you want to go with for 2 reasons. First, Once you port something, thats it. You can change it a little bit here and there, but it isn't always a given that you can go from a stage one, to a stage two, and then finally a stage three. Second, when you start to add up the price of doing a stage one, including all of the gaskets, shipping, wait time, new carbs, tuning and labor put into the job; it would be much cheaper to get it done right the first time. 2) It is almost impossible to re-port a set of cylinders for a +4mm crank that have already been ported. Save up the extra couple hundred bucks and get the crank at the same time. 3) Dan over at Patriot racing did an awsome job on my cylinders! I couldn't tell you by looking at a set of cylinders that have a good job and ones that have an awsome job done to them which one was better; but I can tell you that they look damn pretty when I got them back. You could tell that it took some time so grind those things out. However, just as important as the port work are the people who stand behind it. Dan did an incredible job at responding to all of my questions, notified me before any unexpected changes came along, and he even went out of his way to cover the extra cost of having my package overnighted to me so I could make it to Glamis for Thanksgiving. As far as the customer service is concerned, Dan at Patroit racing is second to none. 4) All I can say about this one is good luck. The kind of port job I would expect done for that price would consist of downing a 12 pack of brew, firing up the air chisel, and smooting it out with a metal file. I think in the end, as long as you choose somebody that has a good reputation for their services, you are going to get what you pay for. You can't go worng with Patriot Racing as far as I am concerned. By the way, I got the Duner port work, trued and welded the crank, replaced one of the bearings, the other bearing was replaced with a TZ bearing, bored, honed, and chamfered the cylinders and a set of Wiesco Pro Lites for somewhere around $850 bucks. Plus you have to figure all of the other things like new carbs, new filters, larger paddles, gaskets, cables, and all of the other things that like to pop up when you didn't expect them. I think in the end, it came out to about 1300 bucks or so. And it was worth every penny!
Justintoxicated
give Jim a call or msg him (PassionRE) he did some nice work for me at a very decent price. Best part is that he was willing to spend lots of time hearing what I want and just talking about the job trying to make me happy. We still talk about things even afterwards, like what comes next It was about $850 for his 12-port, weisco pistons, gaskets, and a Noss cooling head (in red) with domes and freight. Got the crank done for $90 at samco with a fresh bottem end seal kit. you could just send it to jim while your at it, i decided to get it done after I had already shipped my cylinders. Spent another few hundread dollars on new sprockets, chain slider kit, new chain, new clutch lever, screw kits, compression tester, shift rod, parking break block off, lower end gaskets, jets, engine ice, etc. the banshee has a TON more topend now and I can't even imagine leaving my gearing the way it was. fixitrod
I just had mine done by grand river racing and wow. It's a 4mm and pulls from bottom to top. As said above, it's all about the builder and what type of riding you do. There are no magic stages of porting.
