Hi 02Shee:

I did a quick scan of CDW where I buy a lot of computer stuff for work. I find their site to be a good vendor-neutral source when you have specifications and a budget only. Keep in mind their prices are not always the best so I used your high limit.

I also looked at PriceWatch.com for bargains and it doesn't seem they deal much with video cameras of the type you are wanting. They have a lot of network-attached cameras and "web cams" for example. Pricewatch.com is a good source for the absolute lowest prices on computer supplies. The prices are sometimes so low that the vendor reliability comes into question. However it's a good barometer of what you can expect to pay.

Check out these models:

JVC GR-D30US Digital Cybercam

Samsung SC-D23 Mini-DV Camcorder

Bill

Mine is a Kodak 3.1mega pixel that I got for around $350. Takes great pics, but its a little trickey to use. Auto focus is a bitch sometimes, so I've had to learn how to trick it ;)

Hi Joe:

3.1 Megapixel sounds state-of-the-art for video. Is that a still camera that takes short MPEG movies? I understood he was looking for a true digital video camera. Even though many still cameras can take short motion pictures I don't really consider them video cameras.

The recent veterans of BansheeHQ have seen your pics. I remember the ones from that Windowmaker hillclimb out there in Utah. They are pretty good. I presume they were from this same camera?

Regards,

Bill

I bought a top of the line jvc for around 1200 and it's been back and forth to the shop for the last year. I will never buy jvc again. never never never. They gave me a sony $400 loaner and it works better than my jvc ever did. If you want a digital still camera, the fuji finepix s3000 and s5000 are great choices. They let you do 60sec video clips also. The video clip quality isn't that great but the still pics are awesome. If you see any of my pics on here, most of them are with the finepix3800... same as the s3000. Digi video camera's take crappy still shots.

I am currently using a Sony DSC-P71. I love it!!! Only bitch I have is that about 1 month after I bought it, ($260) they came out with the DSC-P72. My father bought that one, after using mine. The P72 has audio with it's MPEG's. And it works splendidly. You can shoot video as long as your memory stick lasts. It depends on what quality you have the camera set on. I can take about 100 minutes of video on a halfway decent setting. Here is a couple MPEG's I shot with it at the tractor pulls this summer.... Oh yea, my camera is 3.2 megapixel. It also has 3X optical zoom, and 3X digital. The higher the optical, the clearer the shot. Most of my pics are taken on the 2048x1536 setting.

The finepix also has sound. You can put as many 60sec video clips on the card until it's full. It's a 3.2megapixel with 6x optical and 3x digital. It comes with an adaptor ring that lets you add telephoto lenses (more optical zoom up to 3x = 18x optical I've found so far), wide, filters etc... It also has macro for the real close up pics. If you look at the 4mm stroker pics I posted you can see I was able to get pretty close to the ports and keep the pics clear. All camera's will not perform to there full potential with low light though. There are a lot of good camera's out there. Just thought I'd add that since boonman was very specific.
