F1HDR
Inline 6 cylinder, turbo charged diesels have been cooking #5 & #6 cylinders since they were invented. The cause is the cooling system. You've got fresh coolant coming in the front of the block that gets heated more and more the farther back in the block it gets. DI manual injection trucks from the 80's did it too. Usually they live a long time though. It's not a frequent failure. I've replaced dozens of #6 pistons and liners in Cummins 6BT's, IH 466's, Cummins 6CT's, and not touched any of the other cylinders. F1HDR
I should add that the issue IS accelerated by excess fuel settings with out equally modifying the turbo and intake system. You can have the best ceramic piston in the world, but if you can't cool down the air going in, AND keep the cylinder wall cool - you're gonna score the liner. Period. m671054
Thought i saw a external coolant pipe mod to get cold water back there.

I haven't seen any for the little engines but I'm sure they're available Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

My understanding is it is not uncommon in other applications for it to be on the 5.9s it appears that dodge did not feel it necessary (big surprise). they replace the freeze plug in the back of the motor, you either need to pull the head or the transmission to install. (this is on a 2nd gen truck i have no fucking clue on anything later)

87sheerips
20.5mpg after the tunes and mods? great mpg. With flat roads at 50mph.... Yea 400miles since delete and tune and I am averaging 17.5 .... Up from 13.5 in stock form. Not to mention insane power increase, Jake brake works way better and sounds insane. Is it bad that I like to drive with my rear glass window cracked a bit? Jet engine.

Different tunes will produce different results in mileage too.
87sheerips
Good to hear. Night and day difference for sure. It is unbelievable. Diesels are so awesome. So much more entertaining than driving a boring gasser around all day. My driving pleasure has just tripled at least with this rig. Cool thing too is no drone. Super quiet inside cab while cruising. 87sheerips
Yep! What exhaust did you install? Muffler- Yes/no? AFE Turbo back 4" with muffler (Muffler basically a glass-pak) makes It a hair deeper than a straight pipe and less drone... So I am told.
LaegerEliminator
4 mpg extra and lots more power. It is awesome. I know on my 7.3 I ran a muffler and it kept it super quiet without much flow restriction. I also wrapped my downpipe to kept sound down. Different mufflers produce different sound. Diameter of exhaust makes a big difference too. We have a 4" Banks with Banks muffler on our 2000 7.3. Has a very nice, very quality, throaty sound to it. On our 6.0 and 6.4 we have 5" exhaust and mufflers. They sound better and different then the same trucks/motors with 4" exhaust.
dirtworxboy
Just put a down pipe on my Duramax not too long ago. They say it's suppose to lower your EGT's by 200 degrees. I Don't know what dodges looks like but Chevys are like smashed looking. This is a comparison of after market and factory. Better sound. Less restriction. Lower EGT's. Better fuel mileage. PITA to change but worth it. This is mine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
