ClaudeMachining
Hi guys, i'm going to tear my tranny apart soon and doing some mods. I'm starting by the shift star. So the first step i did was to sketch one in 3d, close to the real size. I will simply adjust the model when i will have it in my hand. Then, since our 3d printer is working now (was broke for 3 month) i did a little printing this morning. I will do it in 4140 and adjust the hardeness (heat treatment) to match the eom one. So, for those who are interested, i will keep you in touch step by step with the project. Feel free to ask questions.
trickedcarbine
If I send you an appropriate resin and the program, could you print a fella a few parts?
Bennett131
You do know that its acceptable to grind on a stock one and make it work with 5 minutes of spare time without trying to reinvent the wheel?
ClaudeMachining
Sure, but keep in mind that the strengh of your parts will be about 5Mpa or about 725psi, wich is pretty weak. It's for mockup purpose only...

Some people buy it over the net (like the mull one), or grind it out, b ut i like to make my stuff Edited October 7, 2015 by Corgster
Bennett131
Some people buy it over the net (like the mull one), or grind it out, b ut i like to make my stuffUnderstandable, but in my eyes time is money. If someone makes say 20 dollars an hour and you have 5 hours into the part, it is foolish to make one when it could be had for a lot less. If you do it for fun, more power to you. From the 'all engineer are dumbfuck' thread, You should know that i teach that stuff and doing those kind of projects keep me in touch with cnc's and all that shit. So, it's win/win situation for me. I'm doing my stuff and it also keep me sharp on those tools, plus, if the project can fit in one of my course, it's easier to keep students interest high with 'real life' parts. Go to YouTube and search Vice News 3D printed gun. Their first few were not holding up at all. After that little documentary the gentleman who has started the whole process has begun dumping money in to resin research. They are starting to see promising results.
