bignasty1
my guess the only reason why theres no vin and its been ground off is that it was stolen at one time or another did you buy it used and do you still have the dudes name and number you bought it from. i always keep some info from the dude i bought my bikes from cuz i have had friends have just what you explained happen and them loose their bikes or go through a bunch of shit to keep them. i dont know the details on what happen to them but i can find out i just know of 2 of them(brothers) that had the same prob and had to go and do a bunch of shit to keep their bikes. philshee
Another reason, just about the same as stolen, is someone was buying it , quit paying on it ,and decided to sell it without paying it off, and didn't want the bank to find out . flea49
Could just be they had to put another motor on it.But i would not bet the farm on it,I would check with who i got it from. Also i was told that the motor number dont mean shit,it is the frame number they go by. Nightrider
Dude, get ready to get f-ed.I lost a CR250 because of the same situation. The bike was impounded and my lawyer asked me if I knew its origin.I told him I wasn't sure,so he told me to forget about the bike and accept the loss. The bike was an 87' and I couldn't trace it back to the original owner. He told me that if I went to claim it and it came up stolen that I could be prosecuted.I will "NEVER" buy a bike without a title again. Toomey Banshee
It was stolen at one time. Thats the only reason someone would go through the trouble of grinding the vin off of both the engine and the frame.
NYUK
you wouldn t grind the numbers off it because you stopped paying on it.it s probably stolen.
.
You'll lose the vin numbers on the frame if its powdercoated. An engine vin number dont mean crap. You could tell them that the frame was powdercoated at one time and it isnt the original engine in it. Just a thought.
holeshotkid
When I did the j to a arm conversion on my son's I sandblasted the frame. I took great care around the area of the VIN so it would remain visible. After painting it is just barely visible. Had I sandblasted the frame in that area like I did the rest, the number wold have dissappeared. Has your frame been ever been stripped? frocashmoney24
we sanded where the frame one would be and there is no sign of the vin on the frame, we called the guywe bought it from he only had it for a year, someother guy owned it before him, maybe we should try to get intouch with him, thanks for the help, i just dont want my dad to loose his pride and joy
philshee
If you reported it stolen, collected the ins. money, ground off the numbers , and sold it. That would be another reason.
Meat
If you buy a new frame directly from Yamaha.... it will come without any VIN number on it.
fixitrod
Like meat said. It would have to be titled by have a police officer to a vin to prove there was not vin. Then you'd have to apply for one. They'd send you the paperwork for the new vin. You'd have to add the vin... I use a trophy shop to make a meatal label that I rivet on. Then a police officer would have to do a vin inspection on it again to prove the number was added. Then you could get a title. That's in Indiana anyway. boonman
In NY, everything is sold with a title. It works well that way. However, my buddy bought a shee in Mi, and there is no titles there. Still doesn't have title, or registration for it... I painted my frame, and the VIN is now gone.. I still have my reggy for it though....
fixitrod
Indiana and MI both do not require a title. It's like buying a bicycle. You can get atv's titled if you want to ... I did just in case... but, I had to pay taxes then. That's why some states require a title....so they get your tax money
